Kristy disappeared from her home in Sacramento, California sometime during March 2000. Three months later, investigators received a phone call from a man who said he was told that Kristy was murdered and her body was disposed of. They did not realize she was missing until this time. Kristy's 3-year-old daughter was located safe at a home in North Sacramento on July 9, 2000.

In August 2000, Helen Margaret Tibon and her brother Kevin Clark were charged wtih Kristy's murder. She was living with them at the time, and Clark is the father of her child. At their trial in 2002, they were sentenced to 25 years to life in prison. Foul play is suspected due to the circumstances involved, but Kristy remains missing.
