Oct 18, 2010 story

After Andreas Marts was reported missing in July, police found the Leavenworth man’s car by the boat ramp at Riverfront Park. It appeared Marts may have jumped into the Missouri River, but his body never has been found.

Friends and family of Marts, 25, gathered near the boat ramp Sunday for a candlelight vigil.

“We’re all better people because we knew Andreas,” said the Rev. Sam Sanford.

Sanford is the pastor at Rock of Ages Chapel, which Marts attended. Sanford also knew Marts through the minister’s work as a chaplain at the Eisenhower VA Medical Center.

Kristie Hopkins, who also attends Rock of Ages, said she’d suggested having the vigil because Marts’ friends never had any kind of closure. She said the event was a way of recognizing him wherever he is.

“He was an amazing big brother,” said Marts’ sister, Carolina.

She said her brother always wanted to help people any way he could.

“He was a day maker,” Sanford said. “He liked to come around and make people’s day.”

Sanford told those gathered to never take any day for granted.
