Greenwood County authorities are still looking for a man missing since summer 2022.

Kansas Missing and Unsolved says Brandon Shane Smith went missing from Elk County in early August. A heavy equipment operator, certified hazardous materials instructor, farmer and equipment mechanic, Smith did not renew his Commercial Driver’s License when it expired in October.

From Feb 2023

Brandon Shane Smith has been missing since July 28, according to Kansas Missing and Unsolved.

This is somewhat confusing. Was Brandon in Greenwood County or Elk County when he went missing? It's been a long time. What happened to him? Where was he staying at?

The entire Greenwood County has a population of under 6000 people.

Not renewing a CDL is a big thing. It takes so much to obtain one in the first place, everyone I know with a CDL renews them even if they haven't driven truck in 20 years.

I do not know if this link is for the same individual -- same middle name and age, but Smith is so common that who knows. It says he was arrested on 7/30/22 and released 8/1/22.

As a hazmat instructor I'm assuming he had the hazmat transport endorsement on his CDL. According to the website for CDL renewal in Kansas: "If you hold a Hazardous Materials endorsement (hazmat) from the Kansas DOR, you will be required to undergo a threat assessment investigation, which is a very specific type of background check processed through the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). You will also be required to have your fingerprints taken before your hazmat endorsement can be renewed.: (website is here for full info: Renew Your Kansas CDL | DMV.ORG.)

He might have been concerned with a recent arrest, but it was a misdemeanor so I don't know if that would have impacted his being able to renew that endorsement on his CDL. Still, I can't imagine him not at least trying to renew it. I have a Certified Flight Instructor's Certificate and if it lapses I'd have to take all the checkride in the aircraft again so I'm diligent NOT to let it lapse even though I haven't taught in years.
