Father of 8-year-old girl tells how a convicted killer became the baby sitter

A convicted murderer was arrested in Wichita on Monday on suspicion of raping an 8-year-old girl he was baby-sitting, police say.

Clifford Eugene Cox, 56, was arrested and booked into jail on charges of rape of a child, aggravated criminal sodomy and aggravated indecencies with a child, Sedgwick County Jail records show.

Cox pleaded guilty in 1984 to strangling Cathryn Kessinger, 23, of Winfield with a rope. He was sentenced to life but was let out of prison on parole in 2006, according to Kansas Department of Corrections records.

What an awful story. It sounds like there were a lot of systems that led to this situation, and a little girl will pay the price. I hope there are some changes made.

That's EXACTLY why I do not believe in life sentences for convicted murderers. They RARELY ever mean life. After a while, everything dies down and a prisoner has been behaving in jail (what else can they do, IMO), and they let them out. How many times have we read about these cases (and probably many times it's not revealed). I believe if you murder someone, and it is proved beyond a shadow of a doubt (in this case, he admitted it), you NEVER EVER let them out. They should get the death penalty and it should be administered within a year of the verdict. This man was a time bomb. Makes my heart sick for these innocent children. They fear nothing but their own mortality. MOO

He was babysitting several children, INCLUDING HIS OWN (somebody married him!!! from the "desperate to be wives" group, no doubt). After he was released for the murder, he got probation for drug and weapons charges. WHAT THE HEY!!! MOO

Sounds like Kansas needs to rethink and revote on their political representatives in that state. JMO, MOO. makes me sick, sick, sick. OK, I'll go stick my head in the sand....
