FBI investigating Olathe bar shooting as a hate crime

The FBI is now investigating the deadly bar shooting in Olathe as a hate crime.

KCTV 5 reports (http://bit.ly/2lQ7fgi) the U.S. Attorney's Office and the Department of Justice Civil Rights Division are also assisting with the investigation.

The triple shooting and murder happened on Feb. 22 at Austins Bar and Grill.

Srinivas Kuchibhotla, 32 of India, was killed. His co-worker, Alok Madasani, also 32 and from India, was wounded.

Twenty-four-year-old Ian Grillot was wounded when he tried to intervene.

The shooter, 51-year-old Adam Purinton, was charged on Monday with premeditated first-degree murder and two counts of attempted premeditated first-degree murder.

Affidavit reveals new details of fatal shooting at Austins bar in Olathe

According to the affidavit, Purinton allegedly made comments to Kuchibhotla and Alok Madasani, two 32-year-old Garmin employees from India, who were sitting together in the bar’s patio area.

Madasani later told police he did not know why Purinton was making comments. He remembered hearing him ask if their “status was legal,” according to the document.

Kansas law does enable judges, when sentencing, to consider it an aggravating factor if a crime was “motivated entirely or in part by the race, color, religion, ethnicity, national origin or sexual orientation of the victim.”

Man charged in Olathe Austins bar shooting makes court appearance

The man accused in the fatal shooting at an Olathe bar last month made a brief appearance Thursday in Johnson County District Court.

An attorney for Adam W. Purinton requested more time, and another court appearance was set for May 9.

Adam Purinton, alleged shooter at Austins Bar in Olathe, charged with hate crimes

Purinton was previously charged by Johnson County prosecutors with first-degree murder and two counts of attempted first-degree murder and is being held in the Johnson County Jail on a $2 million bond.

Authorities did not say Friday if a decision has been made on whether the state or federal prosecution will now proceed first.

Johnson County District Attorney Steve Howe said Friday his office will continue with the state prosecution and continue to work with federal authorities.

A spokesman for the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Kansas said that office will coordinate with Howe’s office on the prosecutions.

Life in prison for murder of Indian engineer at bar; feds' hate crime case pending

An Olathe man who fatally shot a Garmin engineer from India and wounded two other men last year inside a crowded bar was sentenced Friday to life in prison.

Adam W. Purinton was sentenced in Johnson County District Court, where he pleaded guilty in March to a charge of first-degree murder for killing Srinivas Kuchibhotla.

Purinton, 52, also pleaded guilty to two counts of attempted first-degree murder for shooting Alok Madasani, a co-worker of Kuchibhotla, and Ian Grillot, who had come to the aid of the two other men.

Under terms of the plea agreement in the case, District Judge Charles Droege sentenced Purinton to the maximum sentence on each of the three charges, and ordered them to run consecutively.

Purinton will not be eligible for parole for 930 months — or 77.5 years — and he acknowledged in court documents that the sentence "will ensure I die in prison."

Federal hate crime charges are pending against Purinton, who is scheduled to enter a plea in that case on May 21.
