Hammerle was last seen in Manhattan, Kansas on August 22, 1981. It was reported that he and a man named Joseph Grasher left a birthday party on Poyntz Avenue with people in a red van. Both men have never been heard from since and the van has never been located.
Hammerle is paralyzed from the waist down and was confined to a wheelchair and had a colostomy bag at the time of his disappearance. Few details are available regarding the men's cases, but foul play is suspected. Their whereabouts remain unknown.
