KS - Toby Young for helping prison inmate escape, Lansing, 2006

She's just not the criminal type .. she's much more like your next door neighbor.

And that's the most puzzling part of all this. She is like the gal next door. Who knows what was going on, but it's clear, she realizes she made a huge mistake. Manard on the other hand, looks like he could care less. He just enjoyed his time out of prison.

I do wish she'd not done that interview with the local media. She must not have an attorney (or at that point). I'm sure they'd tell her to not talk. It's not that I want her to get away with something, but she's obviously in a state of mind that she may say something that could hurt her (later in court), but it was said because she was under such stress.

I'm not sure where she'll be taken, but if it's in Kansas City, Kansas, I won't go. You need an armed guard with you to go to the downtown courthouse. I think the prison is located in Leavenworth county, but the federal courthouse is in KCK. So we'll see where it ends up. I can see her doing a plea of some sort and never going to court.

This is just so insane. What was she thinking???? And now we hear that she was having a relationship with the guy. Maybe this sort of thing is more common than I realize. But for the life of me, I just can't understand why anyone would throw away their life like this. If you want to have an affair, jump on the mailman!!! At least you won't do time! But I think still think the "rescuer" issue played into this.

Hey LuvBeaches :)

I completely understand how you feel regarding Toby not giving interviews and why. I agree. As her friend/acquaintance that would be my feeling as well. I must say though - after seeing her on both Inside Edition and again tonight on "Greta" - I don't think she did herself any harm. Toby's demeanor and verbiage tended to endear one to her rather than one having a feeling of anger or desirous of harsh punishment for her. It's kinda hard to explain.

She made a "biggie" mistake and I'm sure she'll pay dearly for it - especially emotionally, for a long time to come. And - Toby's got a lot of bridges to mend with family members. Personally, I hope she is able to accomplish that and also 'plea without going to Court'.

There was a bit more of the interview aired on Greta's show. I agree with you that Toby is 'a rescuer' and that played a big part in what happened.

I saw Toby on Greta last night and my heart went out to her. She knows she made a serious error and I believe she truly regrets doing what she did. It's just a shame that this con artist swayed her into doing what she did and now she is paying the price. I just feel sorry for her. JMO

It's sad because you just don't expect someone like her to do something like that. But then again, who knows what was going on in her mind. I feel horrible for her husband, boys and her family.

I know there has to be more to the story. I do not believe she just "flipped" and helped this guy escape. Something must have been going on in her life.

Hi Luvbeaches,
In my years of Corrections,I have seen many people leave families for men and women to leave their families for inmates. The inmates brag about how they use these people.

It's just hard for me to understand how anyone could fall for them, but then again, I don't have a clue if anything was going on in her life that may have pushed her in that direction, or maybe there was nothing. I've heard and read where these inmates can manipulate someone quite easily, especially someone not used to working around the inmates.

I'll bet you've seen a lot in your years of work. And I can see them bragging...just look how he acted while in front of the judge. It was like a picnic for him. Laughing it up and having a good old time.

13th Juror...

I hope she didn't do much damage with the interviews. I personally think she's realized that she has scewed up big time, and wants to try and explain her actions. It's just too bad she was duped by this guy. But you do see this happen every now and then.

GreenEyedGirl...

I totally agree. It's just such a sad thing....

Hi Luvbeaches :) ,
We have had many College and University girls come to the facility to volunteer to play volley ball, game night, movie night, ect.
Prior to volunteering they are given a list of rules and they have an orientation. They are not supervised when this occurs.
We have had volunteers banned because they gave male inmates their addresses and phone numbers. They sent them money and mailed them clothing. The inmates directed them to use a fake name to use when mailing letters, sending money orders and sending clothes.
They were found out because the inmates love to brag.
Now you would think that the volunteers would be smart enough to not fall into the false bravado portrayed by an inmate that tell the volunteer "I will pound up anyone who disrespects you".So the inmate shines in their eyes and the volunteer is naive and thinks that the inmate really likes them.
What is the intention of a volunteer who tries to come into a facility wearing inappropriate clothing that any normal person would not wear in a jail. You would not believe what some of the volunteers attempt to come into the facility wearing. Those people have to be told to change clothing.
Please understand that I am not putting all volunteers in this catagory,we are happy that we have them. But there are some that are stupid(yes I said stupid)enough to get taken in by an inmate.

Wow, that is really interesting...and scary.

While in high school, my daughter did a ton of community service, and one of the projects was to go to one of the prisons. I wouldn't let her go. I just didn't feel she was old enough to deal with inmates. And who knows if anyone really is...after reading what you said. I suppose if one was educated enough to understand what motivates the inmates, then it would be fine to volunteer. But most of us don't have a clue. But I don't think the average person has the understanding of how these people operate. I tend to take people at face value, but you couldn't do that with an inmate.

During summer break, my daughter works at a hospital near one of the prisons. Every now and then, they have a prisoner who is in the hospital. They post a guard at the door, and whenever she had to go into the room, the guard went with her. There may even have been another guard in the room, but I don't remember exactly. Even with the guards around, it spooked me for her to be so close to a prisoner.

I think Toby was confused. Maybe just a mid-life crisis to the max, and most likely her rescue nature played a role in what she did. Who knows.

Thanks for sharing you experiences. It's made me cringe a bit, but I'll bet you see it all. I just can't imagine what goes through the mind of someone who would come into the prison wearing suggestive clothing???? Lordy, why would anyone want to attract the attention of a convict? I think "stupid" is a pretty good description.

Hi Luvbeaches,
I want to thank-you very much for your post.
I am happy to hear that your daughter was spooked by the inmate in the hospital.I say this because she has common sense.Something that the students that did not heed the warnings were lacking. The ones that provided the inmates with their home address, phone numbers and other things were as you stated correctly..stupid.
One of the gloating inmates in my unit that was involved with one of those volunteers stated that her vanity is what made her gullable.
I asked him what he meant by that and he said that the way she presented herself made her a perfect tool for his way of getting money, food, clothes and contraband. He looked at me and said that she knew she had a captive audience and she dressed for attention.
Well she got the attention, she spent money him,was banned from the facility, and not to mention humiliated.(She did not answer her phone when she was called for the banned notification. So she was turned away from the facility when she had shown up to volunteer with her fellow students. So they all knew why she was not allowed in.)
He is now residing in a different facility.
Even though both are gone, others take their place.
She is one of the many stupid people.

I know the volunteers do a lot of good, but it almost sounds like they are harder to deal with than the prisoners. It sounds like you really have your hands full with the students. It's too bad a few of them do what they do. It makes it tough for the other volunteers.

I am always telling my daughter to be careful. Careful where she goes...know her surroundings, and everything else now that she is away at college. Not long ago, she told me she was going jogging in our local park. I asked her who she was going with and she told me she was going alone. Well, my head about exploded. I couldn't believe what she was saying. Granted, where the park is located, it is a safe area, but perverts and killers are everywhere. It's also a rather large park, and many of the areas are very deserted. I really couldn't believe she would go by herself after everything her dad and I had talked to her about. I guess it's because she is young, but I have to keep drilling it into her head. She's a smart gal, and she's a focused student, but even she slips from time to time.

It's really interesting for me to read your posts. I knew the inmates would and could manipulate outsiders, but it's so interesting to read about how the volunteers behave. I really would have never guessed, but I should have. It doesn't surprise me a bit.

I did hear on tv today that Toby may end up getting probation since she has no criminal past. But this depends on what the feds do. It was such a great program she had, and she put it and her own life in jeopardy for what...a convicted killer. No doubt, he's doing exactly what you described. It was his own little Excellent Adventure. And now Toby has to try and rebuild her life...

Hi Luvbeaches,

It is always nice to hear from you.:)
Thank you for your post and your update on Toby.
That is so good that you talk to your daughter like you do.
You are an excellent parent.

We had a dog program at one of our facilities here. For some reason it was stopped. Here is an old article for you.
Vermont facility dog program

dark_shadows...

Thanks for the link to article. I can really see where a dog program like these would benefit the inmates. I'll bet a lot of them come from homes where they were neglected and abused, and never learned how to love. Animals love us unconditionally. It's too bad the program was stopped (where you work). I can see where this could be a good tool in the rehabilitation of the inmates. Even if they're not going to see the outside world again, it might help them adapt to the prison surroundings.

I know that no matter what's going on my cats sooth my moods. They look at with their big blue eyes, and purr and it's over for me. Yes, I am the Crazy Cat Lady...as my kids call me.

As for being a excellent parent...thanks for the compliment. We try...but looking back, there are many things we would have done differently. We are so fortunate that our kids have done so well. They worked hard in school and the two older ones are out working hard in the world. The youngest will be out there soon...at least we hope so. College is sending us to the poor house! :)

I do appreciate all the info you posted. It's always interesting to hear what someone has to say about situations when they are directly involved in similar surroundings.

This sentence isn't nearly long enough.

Was that 21 months locked in a dog crate  Actually that would have been a good sentence. I agree with you though...not long enough at all.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. — A woman who helped a convicted murderer escape from prison in a dog crate was sentenced Tuesday to 27 months in federal prison.
A judge ruled that Toby Young's federal sentence should run concurrently with a 21-month state sentence she already is serving, which means she will be released sometime next spring.
Young helped John M. Manard escape from the Lansing Correctional Facility in February 2006 by hiding him in a crate she used for a dog-training program at the prison. The two were captured nearly two weeks later in Tennessee.
Young pleaded guilty in March to a federal charge of knowingly providing a firearm to a felon. Prosecutors had sought a five-year sentence. Her attorney asked for an 18-month sentence to run concurrent with her state sentence. http://www.foxnews.com/wires/2007Aug28/0,4670,DogCrateEscape,00.html

LuvBeaches - most interesting inside tidbit! Please do keep us posted on Toby's travails through the justice system as best you can. Thanks! :)

Not long ago, I heard that someone I know is dating her brother.

This is just the strangest case. We've all known people that do crazy things that you'd expect from them, but not this gal. She was the last person I'd expect to pull something like this. But then, I didn't really know her, but I have friends that do know her well...and they are all scratching their heads.

I have a friend that ran off with some guy she met on the Internet. This was the very last person you'd think would do such a thing. It seemed her kids and her hubby were her world...guess not. She left them all behind.

Have people lost their minds????

Toby Young gets 27-month sentence on federal charge in prison escape

I guarantee I will never be on this side (of the courtroom) again,” she told U.S. District Judge John Lungstrum.

Soon after, Lungstrum sentenced Young to 27 months in prison, the maximum allowed under sentencing guidelines. The sentence will run concurrently with the 21-month sentence that Young already is serving on state charges for helping John M. Manard escape.

Young will be given credit for time already served, which means she would be released sometime next spring.
