A skull, vertebra and lower jaw bone were found off Willow Road near Auburn Tuesday, Dec, 5 by two duck hunters, are in fact human. A report has identified the remains as belonging to a white male between 30-60 years of age.

The search for additional remains has been halted until the remains can be identified.

Draining a section of water near where the remains were found proved difficult due to a beaver dam.

[h=1]KSP detective's memory helps police identify human remains[/h]

When Kentucky State Police Detective Joe Gregory was assigned to investigate the human skeletal remains found near Auburn in December, he remembered seeing an abandoned vehicle near that spot in 2015.


Ultimately, that memory he had from his days as a road trooper led to the identification of the skull and vertebrae of John J. Cauley, 66, of Ohio, Kentucky State Police Post 3 spokesman Jeremy Hodges said.

Back when Gregory was a road trooper, he ran the car’s registration through law enforcement databases in 2015 and learned that Cauley was the registered owner of the vehicle, Hodges said.


Gregory went back through state police records of his original contact with the car, found Cauley’s name and obtained a subpoena for his dental records.

Dental forensics confirmed the teeth in the skull were a match to Cauley. November 2015 was the last time anyone could account for Cauley’s whereabouts, Hodges said.


“It had appeared that all of his worldly possessions were in the car,” Hodges said.


The investigation into Cauley’s death continues, and police have not determined the cause and manner of his death, Hodges said.
