Search continues for missing 87-year-old Campbellsville man

Volunteers had already searched more than 3,400 acres in the field behind his home and searched more than 14 miles of shoreline near the local lake.

“Yes, he’s 87 – he is old, but he has family, he’s got brothers, he’s got sisters, he’s got niece and nephews that want to find him and bring him back – hopefully safely,” Diana Evans, Curry’s niece, said.

Still missing.

Neighbors across the street apparently brought food to Curry’s house the day before he went missing. Donald Skaggs was the last person to see him.

“He seemed like his usual self. The only thing I said was odd was he didn't come straight over like he normally does. It was like 25 minutes or so before he came,” Skaggs explained.

Skaggs said he also complained of lack of sleep the night before.

The next day, Skaggs said his wife noticed the lights to Curry’s home were still on early in the morning which was unusual.

“So I called. No answer.”

Skaggs said the door was unlocked. Other neighbors noticed he left behind his shoes and his glasses. Investigators said they're exploring all possibilities.

A Taylor County man is still missing after more than a week of search efforts.

[...]

“We’ve had some possible sightings, but they turned out not to be him,” Cox said, including one tip as far as Louisville that the Metro Police Department determined to be someone else.

AH, who is Curry’s great-niece, noted that his disappearance is out of character because, despite his age, “he was in his right mind and way beyond healthy for his age.”

“He push-mowed his own yard,” she said. “He started his own garden, tended to it. When the garden grew, he canned it so he would have fresh food throughout the year. He had chickens that he tended to that were his pride and joy … He was sharp as a tack to be his age.”

There have been 16 teams engaged in search operations to find Curry, with crews looking on foot as well as using utility task vehicles, horseback, K-9 units and helicopter support.

[...]

Officials have asked Smith Ridge residents to still be on “high alert” and check any structures or brush on their properties, but search teams have not asked for civilian assistance beyond this for safety reasons.

“The one thing you might do, if you were a property owner in the area, is to check your own property,” Cox said. “Outside of that, I wouldn’t be sure of anything at this point [for civilians to search for] because search crews have pretty much searched everything and gone over everything twice.”

[...]

While search efforts have not been “as intense” as they were the first week, Haines noted that there would always be a search for Curry “as long as he’s missing.”

[...]

“I would like to ask the community to keep their eyes open to help find my great-uncle Tom,” AH said. “Fire and rescue members deserve a special thank you because they’ve spent so much time and effort to help our family find their loved one. That means everything to me … I can’t thank them and the American Red Cross and the other volunteers who have helped with the search enough.”

Reward offered in case of missing Campbellsville man

Delmar Thomas “Tom” Curry was last seen at his home on Smith Ridge Road around 4:30 p.m. on April 1, according to the Taylor County Sheriff’s Office.

On Friday, Campbellsville/Taylor County Fire Department posted there was a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of anyone involved in Curry’s disappearance.
Anyone with information on his location is asked to call the Campbellsville 911 Center at 270-465-8000.

Where IS this guy???
His home (where he was last known to be) is kind of boxed in by Green River Lake and/or its State Park. The only way to go out to anywhere besides the State Park would be going north on Smith Ridge Road (KY-372) toward Campbellsville.
He apparently wasn't in a vehicle (at least I don't recall one mentioned in any of the stories) so that further reduces his probable location.

Some of the stories mention him possibly being armed.
I wonder if that suggests that he's possibly suicidal, paranoid/angry or that he went out to go hunting.

And isn't $1000 a rather small reward for this situation?
That sounds like what they'd give to somebody for telling authorities who broke into the local drug store. Or finding a "doing well" (not necessarily rich) person's dog.

We (TCSO and CFR) have been engaged in search operations/investigations for eight days. We have now scaled back our operations to a limited search. This means we will search as new leads or areas of interest that occur we will follow up. We are asking for the residence on Smith Ridge to still be on high alert for anything abnormal on your property. We ask you search your structures, heavy brush and fences for any signs of Tom Curry.

Search efforts have focused on 5.32 sq miles of land spanning nearly 3,404.72 acres. While search efforts have been very through, it is impossible for search teams to rule out 100% of the entire Smith Ridge area. We rely heavily on property owners to check your properties and be on high alert for Mr. Curry.

Do you know where this man could be?
[...]

The more days that go by, the more a community gets concerned that the outcome may not be good for an 87-year-old man who has been missing for several weeks.

[...]

Curry lived alone at his Smith Ridge Road home and did not drive. He relied on his neighbors, people like DS and his wife. The S’s noticed something was wrong when Curry’s front porch light was left on.

“My wife got up, she looked over and all the lights were on,” neighbor DS said. “I went over to the house the front door storm door was unlocked and the main door was open.”

Curry never went anywhere without his glasses and hat but, those things along with his shoes were left behind at his home.

“It’s hard to believe he could have gotten very far off being bare-footed,” DS said.

[...]

“Pretty decent mental status, he had all those chickens he raised the chickens and sold the eggs,” Chief Taylor said.

[...]

“There is nothing that suggests foul play,” Chief Taylor said. “We have a lot of unknown answers.”

...Skaggs noted that it was nothing out of the ordinary, and he watched Curry return to his home that evening.

However, the following morning, Skaggs noticed that all of Curry's lights remained on. That was concerning and prompted Skaggs to check on the house.

The door was unlocked and open, and the lights were on, but no one was home. Curry's glasses, boots and hat were left behind.
"Tom didn't go anywhere outside without putting that cap on, and you never saw him without his boots on," Skaggs said.

All of that happened 22 days ago, and there have been no signs of Curry since.

It's so strange that there's been no trace of him. Could someone have kidnapped him for some reason? If that were the case, they probably would have announced a ransom or something like that. Wouldn't they?

If he is dead (murder, suicide, natural causes or accident) then I don't understand why he's still unaccounted for. The land in the area is kind of rugged, but still... If they haven't found him with any of the searches, there would likely be buzzards and the like in the area. They're already swarming around even small roadkill in my area (a few counties north of Campbellsville). Were he to have wound up in Green River Lake, wouldn't he have surfaced by now?

As desolate as the area may seem when looking at a map or satellite photo, there should have been a decent amount of traffic on his road lately. Smith Ridge Rd takes you to a couple of the boat ramps. I live a little SW of Taylorsville Lake, another slightly younger KY reservoir, and I've seen plenty of people towing boats around recently. There's only one of the Taylorsville Lake docks they would be going to if they were in my neck of the woods. Actually, they could have been going to Green River Lake or even Lake Cumberland. We're on the way to both if you're coming from Louisville.

I don't know which of Green River Lake's docks are the most popular, but the route to two of them would take you right by Mr Curry's house. So him just up and vanishing in a flash seems so much more crazy.

It's disturbing. His screen door was unlocked, the main door was open, his porch light was on, he left without his hat, glasses, and shoes but his great-niece says he was in his right mind and way beyond healthy for his age. It does not sound to me like he left voluntarily. MOO

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – Officials located a body in Campbellsville Tuesday evening.

This is the same area where 87-year-old Tom Curry went missing more than a month ago.

Officials say the body was found less than a half mile from Curry’s home.

The coroner has not yet confirmed that it is Curry, but the family believes it is him.
