Man accused of killing girlfriend in Williamsburg, living with body for weeks

A missing person case has turned into a homicide investigation.

Monday, police arrested 58-year-old John Meadows on charges of murder, abuse of a corpse and tampering with physical evidence.

Williamsburg Police Chief Wayne Bird says when officers searched Meadows’ apartment on February 1, they found human remains inside a trash can. He says Meadows had been living there with those remains for around three weeks.

The remains are thought to be of Meadows’ girlfriend, Donna Lay, who was reported missing on January 27.

John Meadows has been arrested and charged with murder after human remains were found in a trash can in his apartment. He lived with them there for 3 weeks.

Meadows was arrested and charged with murder, abuse of a corpse and tampering with physical evidence.

Lay was 56, said Whitley County Coroner Andy Croley. He said an autopsy Tuesday confirmed that the woman died as a result of homicide, though he said the exact cause of death is “pending further investigation.”

The coroner is still trying to find Lay’s family members.

Croley said Lay is thought to be from the Bowling Green area. Though she had lived in Whitley County for several years, he said she did not have family there.

Meadows is being held in the Whitley County Detention Center.. He’s scheduled to be arraigned Thursday.

Things I’ve learned from 2020 and WS:
Don’t date, don’t marry, don’t go hiking, don’t be a young male and drive anywhere, no one should ever go near water, glue your cell phone to your hand and keep it fully charged, and dress warmly. Even in summer.

God rest Donna in the comfort of His arms.
