Trial in child's 2012 brutal beating death may be delayed again

Casey Secor, the latest attorney representing Broussard, advised 15th Judicial Court Judge Laurie Hulin the defense intends to request the July 10, 2018, trial date be moved back.

Co-counsel, Secor said, has an application pending to be certified with the Louisiana Public Defender Board to serve as pro-bono second chair.

"I'm doing everything I can to resolve this case," he said Wednesday. "I'm asking for the opportunity to do my job properly," which requires a delay.

Jury may see child's autopsy photos in accused killer's trial

Secor, arguing against the introduction of about 35 autopsy and crime scene photos, said the photos are gruesome, could prejudice the jury against Broussard and are not necessary because witnesses can testify to the cause of death.

He called the photos "gratuitous" and said they would "inflame the jury."

Hulin said she will allow the photos to be shown at trial provided they are properly vetted.

Defense attorney Casey Secor asked 15th Judicial District Judge Laurie Hulin to push the trial date back. The latest indigent defender to represent Broussard, Secor has been on the case less than two years. He said Thursday the Louisiana Public Defender Board has not approved his co-counsel, a complaint he made in November as well.

Hulin tentatively scheduled jury selection for the week of March 11, 2019.
