Trial in slaying of Pottsville jeweler delayed indefinitely because of coronavirus

The criminal courts and the district attorney’s office in New Orleans Parish are not scheduling jury trials.

Hall’s case is ready for trial, but officials are unsure when jury selection or a trial schedule will resume, according to the New Orleans Parish district attorney’s office.

Hall’s case is scheduled for a pretrial conference Sept. 16 but is most likely will be rescheduled, said Ken Daley, district attorney’s spokesman.

The courts closed for employees last week after two employees tested positive for the coronavirus. This week, the courts closed in anticipation of Hurricane Laura.

Daley said Orleans Parish District Attorney Leon Cannizzaro plans to retire on Jan. 8.

If the case does not go to trial this year, he said, a new district attorney will handle the case.
