NEW ORLEANS -- Police are looking for a man who was last seen leaving his aunt's home Wednesday in Algiers.

Police said 22-year-old Peter Oatis, Jr. told his aunt after leaving her home he was going to pick up dinner before going back to his apartment. His aunt told police she tried to contact him several times the next day, but could not reach him.


Oatis has also not shown up for work since then, officials said.

Oatis described as about 5'5" and 254 pounds. He is known to drive a black four-door Nissan Sentra with tinted windows and Louisiana license plate ZIZ720.

Anyone with information about Oatis or his whereabouts is asked to call Fourth District Detectives at (504) 658-6040.

The body of Oatis, 22, was found last week near the Seabrook Bridge. He had been shot to death. The New Orleans Coroner's Office released his name Monday.

"This young man was really one of those students who you could look at and say we did good by," said Smith, who taught Oatis at O. Perry Walker High School in Algiers, before it combined with L.B. Landry High School. "He got the lessons, and he was trying to make a difference for his community.

"The fact he potentially died over a car ... really hurts."

Smith said Oatis' family thinks he may have been killed during a carjacking.

Police haven't publicly discussed any suspects or a potential motive in the case.



Tragic. I hope LE works this one to resolution and someone suffers the consequences for this man's murder.
