Identity, cause of death of man found floating in Mississippi a mystery
by Matt Sledge - [email protected]
May 13, 2015

[...]
Someone first spotted the body about 1:30 a.m. on the west bank of the river, near river mile marker 63 and the Phillips 66 Alliance Refinery, according to Cmdr. Eric Becnel. The Sheriff’s Office used a Plaquemines Port Harbor and Terminal District vessel to search for the body, but debris in the river and darkness ended the search about 4:30 a.m.
A river pilot spotted the body again near mile 46. At 10:20 a.m., police were able to tie ropes around the corpse and bring it up near mile 38.

The body found Tuesday was clad in a dark, ripped T-shirt and blue jeans. No identification was found on the corpse, but fingerprinting and dental records may provide some clues. An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday.

Anyone with information about who the dead man may be is asked to call Plaquemines Detective Sgt. Sidney Smith at (504) 564-2525.

Skull tattoo could hold key to mystery of dead man found floating in Mississippi River

[...]
The Plaquemines Parish Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday released a picture of a macabre skull tattoo found on the chest of the man, who otherwise was too badly decomposed to identify. The tattoo appears to show the initials “CN” in black lettering on the skull’s red throat.
No signs of trauma were discovered on the body, and at this point, authorities do not believe foul play was involved in the man’s death.
Authorities recovered the body near Port Sulphur about 10:20 a.m. Tuesday, but they believe it had been in the water for about a week.

An autopsy performed by the Jefferson Parish Coroner’s Office has not yet produced a time or cause of death.

The Coroner’s Office did determine that the man was white, between 40 and 60 years old, weighing about 230 pounds and standing 6-foot-1 to 6-foot-3.

He had a mustache, light brown eyes and short brown hair with a balding crown.

The man was wearing a dark tank top and American Eagle jeans, size 36x34, with a black belt.

Police were able to lift DNA and a partial fingerprint from the body. Running the print through the FBI’s national database did not produce any matches; deputies plan to try to match it against state and local records.

[...]
Anyone with information about the man’s identity is asked to call Detective Sidney Smith at (504) 564-2525.
The tattoo, Becnel said, is “our best bet to try and break something.”

Multiple news outlets report Anthony Ferguson's body was recovered after a lengthy effort May 12 near Port Sulphur. Ferguson's identity had eluded authorities for weeks because the corpse was found in a state of extreme decomposition.

The Louisiana State Police Crime Lab was able to use DNA to positively identify Ferguson May 27.
