Details of Disappearance

Vernier was last seen in Merryville, Louisiana on August 28, 2007. He had traveled to Houston, Texas with two friends. While they were on their way back, they crashed their car into a telephone pole on La. 389 and Monroe Whitman Road, south of Merryville.

Vernier's friends stated he walked away from the scene of the crash. He has never been heard from again. Investigators found tracks near the Sabine River leading back up a highline along La. 389, and near a slough. They searched in two-mile radius around the crash site, but found no sign of Vernier besides the tracks.

Although he is a knowledgeable woodsman, due to the state of his health Vernier could not have survived outdoors for very long. Foul play isn't suspected in his case, but he is presumed to be deceased.

Sept 6, 2007

<<It was early in the morning hours last Wednesday when 38-year-old Robert Vernier was a passenger in a car along with two other people. When the driver crashed into a telephone pole off Highway 389 in Bancroft, Vernier allegedly walked into the woods and has not been seen since then.

In the Bancroft area south of Merryville, the terrain is rough, with thick woods and brush not easy to navigate. John Vernier, father of Robert says, "They've got cut-overs and these cut-overs are rough and they just grow real thick.">>

<<A massive search of the 9,000 acre hunting lease where Robert was last seen was made last Thursday and Friday by people on four-wheelers, horseback, on foot, by air and with dogs. John says, "Just nothing has shown up at this time."

Deputies and Vernier's family think that if he is alive in the woods around Bancroft, he is gravely ill due to kidney disease that requires weekly dialysis. John says, "He's on the kidney list for a kidney donor. He's just real sick.">>
