The remains were found by a rabbit hunter near East Factory Street around 10 a.m.

The skeletal remains have not been identified at this time and the manner of death is under investigation. The sheriff’s office says that the preliminary investigation suggests that the remains are of a middle-aged man.

The remains have been sent to the FACES lab for proper analysis and identification.

Remains Found in Woods Near Amite, Louisiana Identified

Human skeletal remains found in Tangipahoa Parish have been positively identified as those of a man reported missing in August.

Sheriff Daniel Edwards, in a news release Thursday, said a rabbit hunter found the remains in the woods in Amite earlier this month. The coroner's office says the remains belong to 50-year-old Leonard Hickerson, of Amite.

Hickerson was reported missing by family on Aug. 9.

The manner of death remains under investigation.
