Tova is missing and any leads to her case would be very helpful. It's not much to go on, but someone may know something.

Tova Barnett & Derrick Todd Lee Theory

Here are some reasons why I don't believe Derrick Todd Lee was involved with Tova's disappearance

  1. It is often the case that serial killers are attracted to certain characteristics. A number of Derrick Todd Lee's victims were Caucasians with black hair.
  2. Tova's victim Trineisha Dene Colomb favors Tova, but her case seems somewhat personal, since she is the only black woman we know the killer was responsible for and where her body was found isn't a coincidence or is it? Her body was found in Grand Coteau near the cemetery where her mother was buried seven months earlier.
  3. According to our information, Derrick Todd Lee kidnapped victims from their homes.
  4. It appears that hiding the bodies was never a major concern for him. Tova's body has not yet been located.
  5. According to this document, Derrick Todd Lee was arrested in April 2000 for 9 months which would place him in January 2021, when Tova was already missing. Here is the link: Police admit receiving tip about Lee
  6. I also think he paused his killing spree from July 99 to September 2021. As he was running into some trouble, I believe he decided to lay low during the specified time. ‘Baton Rouge Serial Killer’ Derrick Todd Lee Was An Unremorseful ‘Smooth Talker’

While I do not rule him out completely, I think this degree of involvement is on the lower side for me. I open to more around Derrick Todd Lee.

This month marks 23 years since Tova Barnett disappeared here in Baton Rouge. Now, one woman is using her platform to advocate and bring awareness to families who’ve suffered the same experience.

“She was just such a sweet girl, and she was my friend, and she definitely has made the type of impact for me to be doing this story and to be looking for her,” said Michelle Daniel, Tova Barnett’s friend.

19-year-old Tova Barnett went missing on Dec. 2, 2000. Her disappearance was reported to the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office on Dec. 16.

Despite the long absence, Daniel refuses to let Barnett’s name die.

“I remember reading her yearbook message to me the other day, and she said at the bottom, don’t forget about your girl and I don’t know why that just sticks with me, and it just makes me feel like it is about this moment,” said Daniel.

Daniel has been working closely with deputies to get Barnett’s case reopened and investigated.

“A lie can never keep up with the truth and so, you know, although we have not found a body, unfortunately, the goal now is just to find a motive and to find out what could have possibly happened to her,” said Daniel.

Daniel says she’ll continue to keep Barnett’s name alive and she’s hoping to give others with the same experience the strength to keep searching.
