Tony Bennett's Battle With Alzheimer's Disease (aarp.org)

For four years, the legendary singer and his family have kept his secret. Now, they're breaking their silence

...Tony Bennett has Alzheimer's disease, the most common form of age-related dementia. Alzheimer's is characterized by a progressive memory loss that robs its sufferers of many of the gifts that we all take for granted — speech, understanding, treasured memories, recognition of loved ones — and leaves them utterly dependent on caregivers. Bennett, first diagnosed in 2016, has so far been spared the disorientation that can prompt patients to wander from home, as well as the episodes of terror, rage or depression that can accompany Alzheimer's frightening detachment from reality; and, indeed, he might never develop these symptoms. But there was little doubt that the disease had progressed. Even his increasingly rare moments of clarity and awareness reveal the depths of his debility. ..

Oh no.

Man, Tony just kept on going. Voice went? He'd still give you a show. Saw him many times live, and he was so charismatic. It's said he borrowed Lady Day's phrasing.

This makes me sad. So down to earth that my friend was on Atlantic City's beach. Paying no mind except getting his tan. A guy next to him asked if wanted a cool drink or eats. Yep, Tony Bennett. My Italian friend for the first time in his life couldn't talk.

In our house Sinatra came first. Not for me. Bless Tony and his family. This stinks.
