Hello, this is my first thread, so please bear with me. I've been mulling this around for a while.

Backstory: I dated a guy in 2003-2004 timeframe, and though I don't have anything to tie him directly to LISK, there are a lot of circumstantial details that border on bizarro (goes far beyond "I dated a guy in NYC with strong ties to LI/Gilgo area, had a boat, closet misogynist, ties to/interest in LE, etc). He fits the predominant profiles many sleuthers contribute, and then some. I don't want to disclose too many of those details here, because if it is him and he's lurking around getting off on these posts (yeah, I could see that...), he'd know immediately who I am.

I have a few questions about calling a tip in-- 1) what actually constitutes a legitimate tip? (ie, does circumstantial weirdness count, lol?) 2) What are the repercussions to him if it's not him? I don't want to f-- up an innocent man's life. I'm sure he's married with a family by now 3) What are the repercussions to me if, let's say, it is him? I don't exactly trust that there isn't a cover-up from LE, for whatever reason, and if I start disclosing things, I might be putting myself and my family in jeopardy.

BUT I'd hate to think I was sitting on some information that could help--if help was actually wanted--but potential of fallout scares me. And don't mean to be alarmist about it--I'm sure thousands of people have had same thoughts about people they know, too! I'm getting the sense LE is more interested in covering up than seeking public's help. Sorry, but just how I feel--if they could drop some more clues, might help a lot of people who are in same situation.

I'm sort of straddling a whole bunch of (yes, conflicting) thoughts here, and looking for some helpful feedback. Thanks in advance.

1) what actually constitutes a legitimate tip? I'd provide whatever you have - including circumstantial weirdness ;0) -- anything that could provide a motive, link to the whereabouts of any of the victims before they were killed, anything linking someone to the victims, to the area during the time frames, etc.

2) What are the repercussions to him if it's not him? What do you mean here?

3) What are the repercussions to me if, let's say, it is him? My understanding is that you do not have to provide any identifying info about yourself if you do not want to. The link on the website (Submit A Tip) provides that the tipster's information is optional. There are ways to hide your IP address if that's a concern as well.

This isn't likely very helpful, but I would air on the side of caution and provide what you think may be relevant. Better to reveal and have it be nothing, than to hold back and have the investigation continue to drag on.

There are quite a few men that don't like women, are rough with women, may own a boat, but doesn't mean they're killers.

Imo, unless you have proof or can connect the belt or anything else to him, it's tough to call in saying this guy might be LISK.

I'm sure they're are ways the feds & detectives can check him out w/o letting him know he's being looked into......I know you've stated you can't give us much information, & I don't blame you, the last thing you want is to be right & having LISK stalking you after he sees your posts. (Scary to think about)

I've read many situations like this where women call in tips saying it's their husbands, bf's, dad's, etc.......& most times it's nothing after being investigated.

But Ted Bundy's gf called a tip in about Ted & she was right, & it's happened in other instances, so you never know.

It's been 17 years since you've dated him, so be careful not to ruin his family over this........you can give his name to the feds & any other info & tell them.you want to stay anonymous, & hopefully they check him out & he's cleared.

This is the link to click on & submit your information.......

Wonderme12: No, I don't have anything that directly correlates with victims or motive or anything like that--like I said, it's just circumstantial based on what we know of LISK. Just a profile that might fit, some circumstantial oddities, and overall, unexplained bizarre behavior that falls in pattern with LISK, or what we know of him. So again, not really sure that's a "tip"--maybe more like a suspicion of someone, which is why I'm super cautious.

Agreed, SecretAgentMan, don't want to destroy anyone's life unnecessarily. Wasn't sure how follow-ups are handled, and if it would be apparent to them or their loved ones that they were, indeed, being investigated. But it sounds like that would be the case.

Fabra,

You said he has strong ties to "LI/Gilgo", is it one or both? Long Island and Gilgo are not exactly interchangable... I know you don't need a geography lesson which is why I am curious as to why you mention Gilgo specifically?

Don't see how you could be ruining his life if he is not guilty. Depending on the information you have, LE may exercise their due diligence or your tip winds up in the abyss. If they determine he is not a POI he is simply eliminated .....

As intelligent and knowledgable some of the contributors to websleuths maybe , simply fitting the profile generated by a community comprised of mostly amateur, armchair detectives is hardly enough to warrant investigation. As SecretAgent mentioned there are probably hundreds of woman whose ex-husbands have misogynistic traits and suspect they must be involved. There was one who used this website frequently ....

In fact, if there is anything we learned from this case (most of us knew this before) it is that LI is full of men who use prostitutes, drugs, have violent tendencies and may have ties to law enforcement. There was always "a guy who knew a guy who could you a PBA card" - it's really just a microcosm of the country with the exception of the income factor as LI is well off in comparison to the nation.

This guys name won't be put on the cover of Newsday, I can guarantee that. Unless of course, he winds up being LISK. If anonymity is a concern, you can use a VPN or submit the tip from an Apple Store, Library, Device not linked to you. Hope this helps.

Apologies--think I wasn't clear in making my point that this guy certainly met the 'baseline demographics' of the suspect profile, if you will (ties to LE, NYC, the Gilgo association, misogynist), but there are much more compelling details I don't feel comfortable disclosing here, for reasons noted in my opening post. Agreed that there must be thousands of guys who fit the basic bill.

Figured I'd throw the question out there to you guys to glean some of the collective wisdom out there--appreciate the insights!

Yah, VPN a good thought, for sure.

If it really, really bugs/gnaws at you, then make the call. If it pans out, good, and if not then at least you put your mind at ease.

As for ruining someone’s life, that’s a double edged sword. Some people are investigated and never even know it while others fall into a horrible Central Park 5 type of situation. The sad fact is that it’s all at the mercy of law enforcement with no guaranteed outcome.

Fabra, Tough choices on your part. However the right thing is to disclose the information to the authorities. You never know if Law Enforcement has been suspicious of this guy previously and you may be the key to breaking the case.

Since you have some personal concerns, if I were in your shoes, I might consider retaining a lawyer with some knowledge of the case. The lawyer will be acting on your behalf, and can help you with some of your questions and disclosures.

The problem with a lawyer is he may be expensive, and your financial situation may make that impractical. Then, I would use a Crime stoppers anonymous tip system, which is accessible through the Gilgo News website.

Ok, the Gilgo Association is a strong tie and I wouldn't implore you to post anything you feel uncomfortable with here. There maybe thousands who fit the basic bill, but given the Gilgo link you mention, that narrows down the pool significantly.

If there is any one idea we can say the sleuthing community, police, media have reached consensus on, it is the familiarity with Gilgo.

So ... Did you submit your tip?

Yes--detective said he would do some more digging.

Thanks for all the replies.
