A 6-year-old girl riding in her parents' car had her hand severed while playing with a jump rope that got caught under the car's wheel, Los Gatos police reported.

Praying for this little girl and her family. I hope the reattachment is successful.

I hope they were able to reattach her hand, they don't seem to have released the results of the surgery yet. Poor girl

This is a local story for me, and the article I read in today's newspaper said they were able to reattach it successfully after 10 hours of surgery with a hand specialist... What a freak accident! Mother never should have let her have the jumprope in the back seat.

Hindsight is 20/20....I certainly would never have thought that an accident like this would've happened, as I'm sure the Mother didn't either. I could certainly see a danger with letting a very young child, maybe toddler-age, having a jumprope....there would be a strangulation hazard with that....but before hearing this story, there is no way I would have ever thought that it would be a danger allowing my 6 year old to have a jumprope.

This reminds me of when I was a kid maybe 7 and my mom let me hold our new puppy on a leash with the window down. Puppy jumped out and I didn't even notice..she had to ask me where the dog was and sure enough thank god we were still in a residential area and she was running along side the car. I have no clue how long she was out of the car but thankfully she just ended up with scraped up bloody paw pads that healed on their own. But as far as kids go I think the best rule is no strings or cord of any kind..mine don't have any sort of rope access but i've seen my 3 year old inadvertantly tangle up my two year old in balloon string and thought that the two year old was trying to steal it so he just kept pulling harder. The most innocent seeming things can be so dangerous, it's sad this has happened to that little girl, but hopefully this makes us moms a little more cautious and thoughtful in the types of objects we allow to be played with outside of our line of sight.

Ever since the whole drawstring thing in the 90s when I was a new teacher, I am weird about strings. My kids think I am a little :crazy: (AND???) but I do not like them playing with stuff like that.

I have a healthy caution for ropes and their power after studying a liability case/student injury from Katy, Texas years ago. The children were playing tug of war and the teacher let or didn't realize one child wrapped the rope around her finger. Good bye, finger.

That finger thing you describe is called an "avulsion" injury, and they are super-horrible. (It's pulling off whatever it is that's removed, and there can even be a head {{{shudder}}}avulsion injury.

The surgery on this little girl's hand took a long time, but I'm thinking it may have been a straight cut and not avulsion....

This is similar to a story in my city. It was a young boy I think around 8 years old. He was riding in a truck with his parents leaving the dump. I guess there was a loose tie-down and he grabbed hold of it and it ripped off his right arm. I can't find the story, but the father retrieved the arm and rushed to the ER. At least the ER at Redlands Community is a 5 minute drive to the hospital through the canyon. They were able to reattach it.

This reminds me of when I was a senior in high school and one of the girls in my class was in P.E. A ball went over the high fence on the tennis court and rather than go all the way around to retrieve it, she climbed the fence. Her class ring looped over the top wire as she jumped down, and it pulled her finger off.
