"Amanda Dabrowski, the 31-year-old Webster native who was fatally stabbed at O’Connor’s Restaurant & Bar July 3, allegedly by a man she had dated briefly, had done everything right.

She had gone in April to police in Ayer, where she was living, after a violent home invasion and attack, allegedly by Carlos Asencio, 28, a New Hampshire resident who is the same man charged with her murder. The attack at her home occurred roughly a week after Mr. Asencio had tried to get back together with Ms. Dabrowski but she had turned him down. She had obtained an abuse prevention order from Ayer District Court against Mr. Asencio, which was active from May 2 to June 3.

She was meeting with book club friends in a busy public place, offering safety in numbers, when the fatal attack occurred."

Stabbing death of Amanda Dabrowski highlights dating violence risks

"According to court records, security cameras showed Asencio walking back and forth in the restaurant in what police say was a search for Dabrowski. As she exited the ladies room, the two met. Then screams brought the entire restaurant to a halt. Witnesses rushed to help as police say Asencio, holding a knife in each hand, rapidly stabbed Dabrowski 15 to 20 times before bystanders were able to bring him to the ground. As Asencio wrestled with the men he shouted, “Kill me. Kill me. I deserve to die,” one of the men told police...

On Friday, Asencio was arraigned in Worcester Central District Court. He was sent to Bridgewater State Hospital to undergo a 20-day mental health evaluation. He is facing numerous charges, including murder...

Asencio had fallen far by the time he was living on the streets of Worcester. He attended high school at Pinkerton Academy, a privately-run school in Derry, New Hampshire and went on to get a degree in cellular and molecular biology from the University of Connecticut, graduating in 2012. More recently, he’d been working as a Quality Assurance Specialist at Bristol-Myers Squibb in Danvers. It was there he met Dabrowski. The two dated for three months before the relationship ended. Asencio, Dabrowski told police back in April, did not take the breakup well...

In court on Friday, forensic psychologist Dr. Stephanie Hansen, who examined Asencio, said the man had been hearing voices in his head for the past two years. In recent months, it has progressed into explosive episodes and anger."

What more could she have done? So freaking sad and rage-inducing. We see it over and over again: men not taking rejection well, leading to obsessive and violent behavior. In this case it was exacerbated by his mental health issues, but still, something societal needs to change.

What she could have done is taken courses in self-defense and gotten self-defense weapons such as tasers or a gun if legal in her area.

She was ambushed coming out of the ladies bathroom. The guy had a knife in each hand. I'm sorry but it sounds like it was over in seconds. 15-20 stabs. Even those people in the vicinty, rushing to help her couldn't pull him off in time. She was blindsided. Would not have had time to dig around in her purse for a taser or gun. And who's to say she hadn't taken self defense classes and wasn't carrying at the time. That's an assumption and very close to victim blaming.

She couldn't have done anything. That's the sickening thing. It's like women just have to wait for the inevitable to happen in situations like this. It's disgusting.

Why should she have to? Why should anyone have to live life like they're fighting bad guys in a movie, jumping at shadows and ready to fire? It's his fault this happened, not hers.

Even a guy with a private school education, degree and a good job can turn out to be a homicidal stalker. I can't imagine taking my chances if I was single any more.

Judge finds Carlos Asencio incompetent to stand trial in killing of Amanda Dabrowski inside Worcester restaurant

Asencio was brought to court after undergoing a 20-day mental health evaluation at Bridgewater State Hospital.

The hospital filed a petition in Brockton District Court, the court that has jurisdiction in that area, asking to continue to hold Asencio for six months for further treatment and evaluation. The hearing on that petition, which will most likely take place inside Bridgewater State Hospital, will take place on Aug. 7.

A forensic psychologist deemed Asencio not competent to stand trial after the initial evaluation, Griffin said. That triggered the hospital’s petition to the courts to have him held for another six months.

Carlos Asencio, charged in killing at O'Connor's Restaurant in Worcester, arraigned for alleged prior attack on Amanda Dabrowski

Carlos Asencio, the man awaiting a murder trial in Worcester following the brutal 2019 stabbing of Amanda Dabrowski at a Worcester restaurant, was arraigned in Middlesex Superior Court Thursday on charges related to an earlier attack on Dabrowski at her Ayer home.

Asencio was indicted last July on charges stemming from allegations that, three months before the public attack on Dabrowski, he broke into her home masked and tried to kill her.

Dabrowski, a humorous microbiologist with an online social media following, fought off her attacker, authorities have said, and told police she believed it was Asencio.

Police have said Asencio fled to Canada and then Mexico after the April 21, 2019 attack in Ayer, but managed to return undetected and kill Dabrowski while a warrant remained active for his arrest.

The public attack took place July 3, 2019 when Dabrowski was attending a book club meeting at O’Connor’s Restaurant on West Boylston Street in Worcester. Asencio’s murder trial is one of 37 on hold in Worcester Superior Court during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Electronic court records show Asencio was held on $1 million bail Thursday in Middlesex Superior Court on 10 charges, including home invasion, armed and masked robbery, armed assault in a dwelling and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

Prosecutors have said Asencio during the April attack assaulted Dabrowski with a stun gun, tried to strangle her and pulled a gun on her.

Asencio is next due in Middlesex Superior Court March 19 for a scheduling conference.

Asencio is held without bail on the Worcester murder charge, meaning he would not be released from jail were he to post bail in the Ayer case.

Would have made no difference. He stabbed her with a knife in each hand as she walked out of the restroom. She had no time for self defense moves or time to get a gun out of her handbag.

A man who brutally murdered his ex-girlfriend, Amanda Dabrowski, in a crowded Worcester restaurant in 2019 was sentenced to life in prison Thursday.

Carlos Asencio, 32, initially refused to enter the courtroom, but after being dragged in by a group of bailiffs, he informed the judge that he had decided to waive his right to be present during sentencing.
