But on the afternoon of May 31, 1990, it all came undone when a blade was jabbed through her throat and her head was bashed off a nightstand in her South End bedroom as her toddler watched.

Tomorrow, Kurvin D. Richardson, 34, of Roxbury, a former family friend who hung out with one of Roman's five sisters, will be arraigned for the cold-case murder at 40 Peterborough St. Police allege he committed the crime when, like Roman, he was just 19.

A stunned co-worker at ARBOR Associates of Boston, unaware yesterday that Richardson was under arrest, described him as a ``star employee'' whose field work includes helping special needs children in Boston Public Schools.

Richardson has worked for ARBOR since 1993. Three years ago, he was named both Massachusetts Staffing Employee of the Year and the Mental Health Services Program for Youth's ``Unsung Hero.''

From April 2009:

After two days of deliberating, jurors on April 3 found 38-year-old Kurvin Richardson of Roxbury guilty of the first-degree murder of Noemi Roman in her South End apartment on May 31, 1990. On April 6 Richardson received a life sentence for the crime.

"The last thing Noemi Roman saw before she died was her son," said Assistant District Attorney Holly Broadbent during closing arguments on April 1. "She put up a fight... She fought, and she got just enough of her killer’s skin beneath her nails to tell you what had happened"...

"Whoever had done this had walked through the front door of 40 Peterborough St.," Broadbent told the jury on March 25. "Whoever had done this had beaten [Roman] so badly about the face that she was almost unrecognizable... And whoever had done this had left [her son] to die that day, too, because whoever had done this had also placed three aerosol cans into the oven and turned it up as high as it would go."
