Shots fired after teen enters wrong Portsmouth home

Police are investigating an early Saturday morning shooting in a Summer Street neighborhood which, Police Chief Robert Merner said, occurred after a juvenile mistakenly went into an unlocked home thinking there was a party there.

The police chief said “multiple rounds were fired,” no one was hurt and the incident could have ended in tragedy.

The shooting occurred around 3:30 a.m. in the area of 140 Summer St. in Portsmouth, where a teenager thought there was a party based on a text message he received, the chief said. He found the door unlocked, went inside and the residents were wakened, Merner said.

According to public records, former police commissioner Brenna Cavanaugh and her partner Mark Gray reside at the home.

Merner said the teen left the home and got into a vehicle, backed up and hit a pole, at which time the homeowner “discharged a weapon, striking the vehicle.”

Cavanaugh said the vehicle accelerated in reverse at her and her partner and the shots were fired in self defense.

They shot him after he left the house and was in his car trying to get away? What kind of BS is this? Are they crazy?

the guy runs out of his house after the ''suspect''?? this is dangerous
he goes ''near'' their vehicle--stupid/dangerous
common sense/etc tells you to:
don't go out of your house
if you do, take cover/concealment
sorry if this sounds military, but I was in for 8 years --but this is just common sense for all
what was he trying to do?? capture the guy? ?

This is very bizarre - was the teen set-up by so-called friends to approach this house and by coincidence the door was unlocked?

A former police commissioner leaves their door(s) unlocked overnight?

I hope the actions of the former commissioners partner are a crime where they live - chasing someone and firing shots at them after they get into a vehicle to leave? What was wrong with getting the license plate number for LE? This is hardly 'stand your ground' material if it even exists in this location imo.

I hope MG is charged with attempted murder, otherwise this will only encourage others to do the same imo.

second nature for me--every night I make sure everything is locked/lights off/etc
like I said, we have the dog--extra security/alarm
we lived in a not too good area when I was a kid
I thought I've read where some rapists/etc get in through unlocked doors and windows
the victims wake up with the jerk in their bedrooms!

I think he knew how to handle a gun. And yeah, maybe he was trying to capture the guy ...
