A British man and his teenage son are among three people still missing after a group of four disappeared while diving off the coast of a Malaysian island.

Adrian Chesters, 46, and his son Nathen Chesters, 14, said to a Dutch national, are still being sought alongside 18-year-old Alexia Molina, who is French.

Kristine Grodem, a 35-year-old registered diving instructor from Norway has been found, maritime authorities in Johor state said

The group was taking part in a training exercise off Pulau Tokong Sanggol, nine miles from the coastal town of Mersing, in waters about 15 metres (49 feet) deep.

Malaysia's Maritime Enforcement Agency launched a search and rescue operation on Wednesday afternoon - before suspending it because of poor visibility and restarting on Thursday morning.

A British man and his teenage son, who went missing while diving in Malaysia, surfaced before drifting away, the only known survivor of the group has said as the search for them enters the third day.

Adrian Chesters and his 14-year-old son Nathan Chesters had been diving in waters about 15 metres deep at a southern island, off the town of Mersing,
when they disappeared on Wednesday.

Alongside them was Norwegian diving instructor Kristine Grodem, who was
rescued on Thursday, and 18-year-old French national Alexia Molina, who remains missing.

Ms Grodem was pulled from the water by a tugboat around 40km from the dive site and airlifted to
hospital.

The 35-year-old, who was training the others, is said to be in a stable condition and without any serious injuries.

Survivor says she was separated due to strong currents

District police chief Cyril Edward Nuing said Ms Grodem told investigators the group surfaced after about 40 minutes and began a second dive. He said they surfaced again soon after because of rough water conditions before they drifted away.
Ms Grodem told authorities she was then separated from the others due to the strong current.

Based on her account, the three others managed to surface. With their equipment, their full gear, and their experience, we believe there is a strong chance of finding them alive," Mr Nuing said.

Boat's skipper tested positive for drugs

Authorities have now expanded the search area and deployed two planes, 18 boats, and about 90 personnel.

Police said the boat's skipper tested positive for drugs and has been detained for further investigation.

All diving activities in the area have been suspended while an inquiry into the incident is carried out.

There are five islands off the town that are popular dive spots for local residents and tourists.

The Foreign Office is in contact with the resort Mr Chesters and his son were staying at and has offered consular assistance.

British diver Adrian Peter Chesters and French national Alexia Alexandra Molina, who went missing on Wednesday, were found safe early today.

Nathan (Adrian's son) is still missing.

Wow, it's amazing they were found after what, 60+ hours out in the middle of the ocean?! I'm not sure what diving equipment they had but it seems like being stranded that long would be horribly traumatic. I can't even fathom how they managed to stay alive. The worst part is, of course, that the 14-yr-old boy still hasn't been found. The article doesn't quote the two survivors found today but does include their pictures post-rescue. The 18-yr-old girl looks happy and vibrant, surprisingly, while the 14-yr-old's father looks understandably solemn & disturbed. I'm sure he is absolutely crushed that his son was not found. What information could he and the girl provide about the boy's whereabouts? No quotes by them that I could find.

Devastating news. I am still haunted by the photo of the father post-rescue. From his facial expression, it looked to me like he knew his son was dead. He said his son was too weak. He probably watched his son die a slow death. I can't imagine anything worse than that. I just feel sick about this.

Great news that 3 were located. Terrible about the son. I'm sure his dad's feelings of guilt for not being able to save him must be immense.

I can't imagine how terrifying it must be, floating out in the ocean alone over night. All that darkness, creatures swimming below and around you. For days!
