Man Builds Guillotine to Kill Himself

  • #21
Taximom, I wasn't saying his suicide was creative and interesting, I was stating that he as a person must have been. I've lost several friends to suicide and they were also very creative people, mostly involved in drama and art. I'm just pondering the connections. They were very "deep" people and looked farther into issues than the "average Joe"

Just a shout out to say I liked your post, Lurker, and found it true. I don't think you were being cruel.

My husband told me about this today. Maybe he just wanted something that he knew would actually do the job. Shooting yourself, even in the head, can sometimes go wrong and you could live. Maybe even as a vegatable. Pills might not work. Maybe he was determined and wanted something he knew would work and work quickly.
--BeeBee,think you hit the nail on the head here--many people fail at suicides and do indeed become brian damaged--One of the J. Paul Getty heirs drank a huge amount of alcohol with an overdose of pills--He survived but went totally blind--many years ago a teenager shot a cop to death, then put the gun under his chin--he survived also but with severe brain damage and is in prison---and we all know that many Golden Gate jumpers survived that huge fall, while trying to kill themselves

I see your point, Lurker. Sorry if I took it the wrong way.

A couple of years ago my sons and I read about a man that rigged a guillotine over his bed. If the alarm went off the guillotine would fall. If he woke up before the alarm it would not. Well of course one day he slept in and he chopped his head off. Made me wonder if he was stressed about work or what. The kids of course took the it a few steps further arguing if he was able to time travel in space, would he have died. lol

I don't quite know what to think of this. i do agree talented gifted people seem to choose suicide. I have my "own" sadness to deal with on that subject which I think almost everyone has now days.
I can only think this man must have read or saw something like this on a tv show or movie.
I always have thought people who do this to themselves are very selfish. After all someone has to find them. Some innocent person has to clean up the mess they left behind.

Well this man sure only thought of himself and must have had a grudge or point to make against society for some perceived wrongs done to him since he did this in public for innocent people to find. I think he could have been really horrible to put up with in life the death is any indication.

To my dearest GlitchWizard,:blowkiss:
I am sure that he did take others out with him in a way. He was a son. He was Loved by someone. I can only imagine the hurt that he left behind in the living ones that Loved him.

Suicide is a very tough subject for me.:(

I agree with that, but I meant like the guy I saw driving in the wrong direction on I-10 a few years ago. He wanted to kill himself, drove right by me - and head on into a truck pulling a horse trailer. Killed the woman in the truck. If you have to kill yourself (and leave family members to mourn) it's best to do it alone. That's what I meant.

Someone commented on botched suicides. I remember in high school, there was a book in the library that was a how-to book. It discussed the physics behind suicide choices, so you didn't make the mistakes that could cause you to be disabled rather than dead. The only part I recall is that if you want to jump off a balcony onto the concrete, do not push off trying to clear bushes. The trajectory of a fall from a building is naturally a curve away from the building, and you could end up in the pool instead of on the concrete. There were many more. I believe it discussed antifreeze poisoning as being effective, but really miserable to endure, etc.

I'm sure it would not be allowed in today's school libraries.

I cannot even imagine the terror that you felt when that man passed you on the road and killed the woman. I am sorry that you had to go through that.

As far as antifreeze goes... a woman drove from Canada killed her son here. She drank antifreeze and put a bag over her head. She also attempted suicide in the hospital. She is going through trial here right now. She says that she was upset over the break-up of her live-in boyfriend. (he was a "live-in boyfriend" for 30 years)

Thank-you very much for the post Glitch.

My best friends soon to be DIL hung herself early one morning from a tree in a park. She knew her Mum walked her German Shepherd in the park every morning at 6am, so she would find her... Which she did. :(

That's really sad Jules.....some people can still be vindictive even in death.

Thank you, but honestly - when we were driving, we saw a blue car go past us the wrong direction, not speeding, not swerving - just looked like he was out on a Sunday drive. Looking ahead, just normal. It was so odd that I didn't even honk at him that he was going the wrong way, just looked at him, pointed him out to my daughter, and didn't feel any terror, just was in awe at how someone could get on the road that direction.

The guy that then passed me looked at me, shrudged his shoulders and shook his head - feeling the same way as I did, I suspect.

I did not actually SEE him hit the truck. We had passed the truck earlier, so we were in the left lane for a few minutes, not knowing he was on his way. My daughter and I waved at the horses.

We pulled to a gas station shortly thereafter, and heard he'd hit the truck over the radio in the station. It was un nerving only because we had been in his lane minutes before the truck was, and it was just timing that let it be her instead of us.

I wish there were a building one could go in, kill themselves, and the staff would clean it up. That would avoid friends and family dealing with the horrific aftermath, and avoid taking others with you. You could have a nice little lobby, and a private room.

When Owen Wilson tried to commit suicide, I was doubled-over by some of the cruel posts I read on other sites. Websleuths is populated with unusually loving and kind people. That's why this site is my only online community.

I will say, though, in the defense of people - that often when we are confronted by the confusion and tragedy of violence, we respond in a flippant removed manner because we don't want to really look at our own fears. It can make us feel safer to make light of the misfortune of others. This isn't kind, but I have seen it enough to believe it is an honest part of the human condition.

I read a book once - cannot recall what book - that had a chapter or two devoted to case studies of unusual suicides. This man's method would have made it into that book.

You are right (as usual) and that is indeed the purpose of humor. It makes frightening things, people, situations seem less so.

Exactly. I bought a book about the many ways people have died at the Grand Canyon, and my husband thought I was the most morbid person ever. There is definitely some "whistlin' in a cemetery" humor in it, as many of the anecdotes are contributed by Rangers.

Side note: Don't pretend to jump and fall off the side of the Grand Canyon as a joke. One guy did that, and did actually fall.
