he apparently mistook a jar of gasoline sitting by the kitchen sink for a beverage. After taking a gulp, he spit the gas out and got some on his clothes.

Sometime later, investigators say Banning went outside to smoke a cigarette and burst into flame.

Who puts a jar of gasoline next to the sink? Second who picks up the liquid and opens the cap, but can't smell that it's gasoline?

I wonder if he wasn't really trying to spew and ignite the gas like a fire eater and someone changed the story told to investigators. Gas in a jar sounds like a Fire Marshal Bill set up. Terrible way to die.
