A man who died after setting himself on fire on the National Mall in Washington has been identified as John Constantino, 64, of Mount Laurel, N.J.

Washington, D.C., Metropolitan Police released the name in a statement Monday evening and asked anyone with information about the case to call the department........

Police said at the time of the incident that they were investigating possible motives. They asked that anyone with information about the incident to call them at 202-727-9099, and anonymous information may be submitted to the department by text-messaging 50411.


He is the right age for a veteran.

RIP Mr. Constantino.

Note to posters: Thank you for a respectful and compassionate discussion. It hurts me so much that this man felt the need to kill himself by fire, for either a cause or personal reasons, because he apparently felt no one was listening. In America today, that is a shame and disgrace.

If he did not leave a manifesto or some sort of message regarding why he did this then he must have been severely mentally ill.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The death of a New Jersey man who set himself on fire on the National Mall was the result of his long fight with mental illness, not a political statement, his family said.........

"John Constantino was a loving father and husband. His death was not a political act or statement, but the result of his long battle with mental illness," his family said in a statement issued through attorney Jeffrey Cox.

The statement did not address the nature of the mental illness.

The family said in the statement that it "would like to acknowledge the heroism of the paramedics and bystanders who attempted to save" Constantino...........

Would it be too much to ask someone, anyone in congress, whose building Mr. Constantino was facing, to get off their arse and develop a plan of some kind for the awareness, detection, treatment, of mental illness nationwide?

Not being political. Just saying it would be a lovely (though long overdue :furious gesture after this man's act. They could even name it the Constantino bill or law.
