Mary Rachel and her mother, Leila Lewis Bryan, were last seen in Carolina Beach, North Carolina on May 10, 1941. Lelia took Mary Rachel and left home about 9:00 pm. She may have been headed out to go shopping. She was driving her husbands car at the time. They have never been heard from again and the vehicle has never been recovered.
Authorities investigated the idea that Lelia murdered Mary Rachel and then committed suicide, but there was no evidence to support this. Lelia's husband, Edis C. "E.C." Bryan, is the prime suspect in Lelia and Mary Rachel's disappearances. He died in 1970 and was never charged in their case. Their disappearances remain unsolved.
