It doesn't sound like they did this to a fellow student, but a random man....who thought he was meeting a 16 year old? This sounds less like a sexual preferences hate crime and more like sexual predator vigilante type stuff. Could be both.

As always, JMO.

Absolutely despicable. I’m glad they found all of these vile little frat boys and are charging this assault as a hate crime. It’s beyond disheartening to think that gay bashings are still going on in this day and age.

They didn’t state the victim’s age, or name, and have shared the names and faces of the assailants, so I’m assuming it’s less about living out a ‘To Catch a Predator’ fantasy and more about assaulting someone who isn’t straight. Not to mention that being attracted to underage children isn’t a sexual preference? Grindr is pretty well known as a hook-up app for the LGBT community. I could be wrong, though.

The way the article reads, that's exactly what happened. The man was lured into a meeting where he thought he'd be having a sexual encounter with a minor. There's a lot of this kind of vigilantism going on now, and it's all over social media.

I agree. How old is the victim?

You are correct. The age of consent in Maryland is 16, so while I hate the idea of 16-year-olds with Grindr profiles, it appears to be legal there. And I would be deeply offended if they described being attracted to minors as a “sexual preference.” That’s awful. It’s charged as a hate crime and appears to be a hate crime, in my opinion. Sad and disgusting.
Just my opinion.

Agreed. I would be extremely surprised if law enforcement was pursuing hate crime charges, which are rarely sought in the first place, if this was an instance of an older man being lured into a sexual encounter with a teenager. The fact that those charges are being filed, and the victim is kept anonymous, makes me believe this is an instance of gay bashing. There are plenty of teenagers and young adults who use Grindr to meet up too. Homophobia still a problem in this country — hence the amount of people who immediately jump to this being an instance of an older male being caught trying to prey on a child instead of it being an example of violence against a gay male.

Hmm, what exactly are the admission standards for Salisbury University, and what kind of culture does this "fraternity" promote? What a toxic and, frankly, disgusting, group of young men.

At least - currently.
Maybe some will learn, change, and eventually become better men.

The victim deserves justice foremost, though.

Another attorney representing one of the defendants alleged that this wasn't a hate crime and the victim was not targeted for his sexual preference.

James L. Britt told the Baltimore Banner it was because the victim intended to have intercourse with a 16-year-old "child."

In Maryland the legal age of consent is 16.

Some Salisbury University students who are accused of attacking a man in an alleged hate crime where the victim was kicked, spat on and shot with a salt gun have been expelled from their fraternity.

The fraternity, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, expelled the members after learning about the incident, in which police said the victim was targeted because of his “sexual preferences.”

”Sigma Alpha Epsilon condemns hate and violence in any form, and we are disappointed that members of our chapter were involved in such an act,” Dave Pascarella, director of communications for the fraternity’s national branch, wrote in a statement. “The Fraternity Service Center has reviewed the circumstances surrounding the indecent and has confirmed that it was isolated to the expelled individuals.”

Agree. His actual age will make a difference (not that physical violence is OK)
Legally, his age makes no difference. Because 16 is the age of consent, it does not matter in a criminal sense if the victim is 18 or 50.

Each of us may judge the victim differently based on his age, but in the eyes of the law, a 16-year-old can date someone of any age in Maryland.

Just my opinion
