BIRTH 4 Jul 1955
DEATH 24 Dec 1977 (aged 22)
BURIAL

Clintonville, Waupaca County, Wisconsin, USA

-----------------------------------------------------------

Diana Lynn Knack, age 22, went missing from Prince Georges County, Maryland on Saturday, 24 December 1977 - Christmas Eve.

Diana Knack was an employee for the previous four years at the Giant Food warehouse in Landover, Maryland. She was last seen in front of her home at 6497 Pennsylvania Ave, Forrestville, MD, by neighbors who watched her loading Christmas presents into a blue Plymouth Duster with racing stripes, Maryland tag number: DTE-961.

Diana's destination was her parents home at 91 Herrington Drive, Kettering, Maryland, but she never arrived. The car she was driving was also missing.

Diana's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Lewis Knack reported her missing at 10 PM, on 24 December and Maryland State Police began the search.

On the night of 26 December 1977, Diana's identification and credit cards were found in the rear of the Tysons Corner shopping center in Virginia.

Police believed early on that Diana might have been harmed, but would not elaborate on how they reached that conclusion.

Diana Knack was 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighed 110 pounds. She had brown eyes and shoulder length hair. She was last seen wearing a camel colored corduroy pants suit with tailored jacket and brown leather boots. She may have been wearing gold wire-rimmed glasses. Her birthdate was 4 July 1955.

Diana's body was eventually found in Falls Church, Virginia and positively identified. She was buried in a cemetery in Wisconsin.

In 1978, Gary Hyer was convicted of second degree murder for killing Diana, and sent to prison.

REHABILITATED, BUT HE CAN'T ESCAPE

Gary Hyer has been in prison for 13 years. After a slow metamorphosis that has changed him from a drug-dependant murderer into an articulate college graduate, he's finally earned a second chance.

But he can't afford the cost of parole. Nor can he afford the high cost of rent in Howard County, where he wants to start his life again.

Hyer, convicted of second-degree murder in 1978 for the PCP-induced slaying of his girlfriend, has looked at his rehabilitation in thestate prison system as a shot at personal redemption.

He has earned college degrees, turned to the prison library for soul-searching and sworn off the drugs that ruined his life.

"I just want people to try and get to know me for who I am today and not for who I was 15 years ago," said Hyer, 38. "I think I've shown that I'm worth taking that chance on."

Yet, even though his prison supervisors and the managers at his pre-release job believe he is thoroughly rehabilitated, Hyer is not being allowed to leave.

"I guess I'm hoping that there's someone out there who can help me," said Hyer, who has been toldby state parole officials that he cannot be released until he has found a suitable home and built up an acceptable savings account.

"I've raised $2,300 on my job, but they say it's just not enough."

At a hearing last week, parole officials told Hyer that his parole would be deferred until mid-January, pending his acquisition of a home and satisfactory cash savings.

Hyer has contacted several social services agencies in the area, none of which can guarantee him housing on his day of release. He has no family here, only a sister in Pennsylvania, and refuses to solicit help from her or the old acquaintances he knew during his days as a drug abuser.

"I'm not asking them. I've had to forget all about my past. I can't ever go back to it."

His struggle has been a major disappointment for him, since the rejection he has suffered -- 24 employers have turned him down for a job -- seems to indicate that society does not forgive or trust those who are rehabilitated...

Boo hoo

Exactly. I read the article and just had to shake my head Ruefully. What's wrong with the picture?

Gary Hyer murdered Diana on Christmas Eve 1977, dumps her body, gets rid of her car and personal things, and only a few months later "confesses". He pleads guilty to second degree murder and is sentenced to 30 years.

Then after only 13 years, he is up for parole, and has been enjoying a great deal of freedom outside the prison, traveling around the area, working a job, and even Holding a Puppy! But he expects the state to just let him go because he has Changed? Or says he has.

Well that was all 30 years ago. What became of him? What has he done since then?

After he killed her, he took her Christmas presents she was planning on giving her family and gave them away to his.

It takes a special maggot. This guy was let off easy being allowed to come and go as he pleased while serving a 30 year sentence. But that was back in 1991 after he had been in prison for only 13 years.

No other news media information about him since then. Today he would be 70 years old.
