GERMANTOWN, Md. - Montgomery County Police are investigating human remains found in the woods near the 12,600 block of Great Seneca Highway in Germantown.

Monday evening, a nearby resident was walking in the field when he came across what he believed to be human bones. Officers then searched the area and collected the remains as evidence. Police say the remains were not concealed or in any type of grave. An autopsy will be completed by the medical examiners in Baltimore - to identify the remains and determine the cause of death.

Human remains found in a Germantown field last month have been identified as a Gaithersburg man who was reported missing in July, Montgomery County police said Wednesday.

The remains, which were found off Great Seneca Highway, were those of Michael Wayne Umberger, 57, of South Frederick Avenue, according to police.
Umberger had been reported missing after he was released from Holy Cross Hospital in Germantown on July 15, according to a police press release that week. He had last been seen by hospital staff at about 7 a.m. that day.
