So according to Google Maps, there are large bodies of water surrounding the area in question. But the two significant bodies of water aren't even in the same direction as his target destination, so I don't see how he could've wound up there.

Yes it's been confirmed that he was drinking and intoxicated. But even in that state, would he really have confused a 14-minute walk to his house with a 21-minute walk to the Severn River? It's not like his house is on the way to the river. He would've had to noticeably turn onto other roads. And it looks like most of the roads he could've taken don't actually end right at the river.

Even the trail that he most likely took before turning onto Stewart Way appears wedged between two rows of houses. If he somehow passed out and died there, would he really have gone unnoticed for 28 years?

It's impossible that he accidentally died while walking home and is still missing to this day... There were no wooded areas behind the mall (outside of the copse of trees separating the homes from the businesses), and he only had to cross one street (which would likely be dead by 1:30 a.m.) to get to the trail... The trail was right to his house, less than 5 minutes away...

I really have no idea what could have happened to him, which is why it's so puzzling... The only logical scenario is that a crime was involved, but there are no suspects or persons of interest in the case... Unless something happened after he left the bar, I simply don't know... I doubt he encountered a crime while walking home because the trail would have been deserted at that time, and I doubt someone could find him on the trail, kill him, and then hide his body where it hasn't been found yet... The only two logical scenarios I can think of are that someone ran him over while he was walking home, took his body and hid it elsewhere, or that someone at the bar that night killed him for unknown reasons... I wonder when that friend remembered the Taco Bell visit. Was it after he knew Cole was missing? If so, I think it was him. If it was much later, it's curious and possibly a dating error. I think there's no doubt he recognized Cole, since they were friends...
whatever
Rest in peace, Jimmy

I agree that it's highly unlikely that James somehow died on the wooded trail to his house and just hasn't been found.

However, I feel like I can't say it's impossible, given the recent case of Tyler Goodrich. Tyler was "found in a wooded area 967 yards from his home" and is "believed to have been in the location for more than a year," even though "the area had been searched by public volunteers." Tyler hung himself, and searchers missed him because "volunteers did not expect to find Goodrich in a vertical position but were probably looking at ground level. He said Goodrich was found close to a tree trunk which made it difficult to see him."

I'm not saying this is what happened to James or that he took his own life, etc. But Tyler's case has forever given me pause and made me reconsider possible scenarios in missing persons cases.

I agree that a reckless driver could've accidentally run James over and then tried to dispose of him. But I feel like in this scenario, it's easier for the driver to just keep going, rather than to dispose of the victim. He risks being seen by other witnesses, not to mention becoming contaminated by the victim's DNA.

What stands out to me now, though, three years after my comment above, is that, according to the Doe Network, James "was seen leaving the bar alone... visibly intoxicated. Witnesses assumed he was headed home on foot." This makes it sound like they didn't actually see James begin his walk home.

In this case, could James, for whatever reason, have headed in the opposite direction, towards Ritchie Highway (Highway 2)? Maybe someone driving by noticed he was drunk, offered him a ride, and that person had bad intentions? Have we been looking in the wrong direction this whole time?

Regarding the distracted driver, you're right, although there could always be a witness and the license plate would remain in his mind... but it could be that we're pointing in the opposite direction... you're going to laugh at me, but if we rule out all possibilities, like a crime or murder... I always believe there could be some time gate to other spaces or dimensions... at least that way I don't have to think about the case...
