“In the world of cybersecurity, Juanita Koilpillai was at the forefront, working with the federal government to create impenetrable defenses against hackers and ransomware. She was a gifted programmer, visionary leader and one of the few women executives in the field, who willingly shared what she knew with the next generation, who she guided and mentored.

Her killing last week pierced many in the small and tightly knit security industry in which the 58-year-old worked. An associate said her death was a blow to national security because of her expertise in defining and understanding how to make virtual work environments secure. The manner in which police said she was killed made her loss even more unsettling, her friends said.

Police have arrested her son, 23-year-old Andrew Weylin Beavers, on suspicion of first- and second-degree murder in Koilpillai’s killing at their home in Tracys Landing last week, Anne Arundel County police said.”

Police say 23-year-old Andrew Weylin Beavers faces first and second degree murder charges in the death of his mother, Juanita Koilpillai.

Officers say 58-year-old Koilpillai was found dead on July 25 outside of her home in the 6300 block of Genoa Road in the Tracys Landing area. Koilpillai's boyfriend called and reported her missing after arriving to the home and finding blood inside.

Investigators say Koilpillai died from 'multiple sharp force injuries' and declared her death a homicide.

In the following days, police say they found Koilpillai's vehicle in Leesburg, Virginia and identified, her son, Beavers as a suspect. DNA belonging to both Koilpillai and Beavers were also found on a suspected murder weapon, police say.

Friends, colleagues remember Tracys Landing homicide victim as ‘certified genius,’ leader in cybersecurity field

"Koilpillai’s friends described her as a master gardener, a celebrated chef, a charismatic hostess and a brilliant technology professional. She flew planes and produced community films with her ex-husband and traveled the world with her friends and their families. Even though she worked non-stop creating several successful start-ups, Koilpillai still developed deep relationships with friends, several of whom said they consider her a sister."
...
"Koilpillai, her son Drew and daughter Talia and her ex-husband lived on a historic 40-acre farm in Paeonian Springs, Virginia, called “Waverley Farms.” Koilpillai, who mastered the art of hospitality, held frequent dinner parties, inviting a range of characters to an evening of thought-provoking conversation and incredible South Indian dishes, Moore said. Koilpillai also loved music — she was in an all-girls rock band in India — and horse races. She took delight in wearing bonnets custom at race tracks, her friend Michaela Iorga said."

The accused person's only previous police encounters appear to have been for minor driving-related issues (failure to renew registration), per the Loudon County Circuit Court which I searched using the Virginia Judicial website. Virginia Court Case Information

The accused person is apparently a musician;I located a Soundcloud account where AWB posted songs here under the name Remmy Renae Reyja (but the email address in the contact info is [email protected] so I am certain this is the same person as the accused murderer). Remmy Renae Reyja. Eerily, the most recent song posted here is called "Lullaby for a Lost Conscience."

Under an almost identical name (Remi Renae Reyja) I found the Facebook account for the accused: Log In or Sign Up to View

Speaking to possible motives for the killing, I observed that Remi Renae Reyja's Facebook uses female pronouns. On November 6 2017, RRR wrote, "I don't know what the right way to say this is, but I'm coming out as Non-Binary. So They/Them pronouns from now on, and my name is still Drew." About 18 months later, on April 8 2020, RRR posted the following: "This is Drew Beavers, I'm changing my name to Aria Shiira-Krishna just wanted to let y'all know so nobody was confused." Then someone responded and asked why the name change, and RRR wrote: "Figured out I'm a Trans-Woman and I HAAAAAAAAATE the name that was given to me by my f***ing mother who forced me to be everything I'm not. She even forced me to be a man, so f*** my name cause I didn't choose it. Definitely gave you a long answer XD"

In March 2020 RRR wrote: "Leaving Berklee because of Coronavirus is the most devastating thing I've felt in a long time. Everything that's happening right now feels very surreal, it's a weird feeling to be experiencing something like what I saw in a movie once." Berklee is a music school in Massachusetts, which--like many other schools--shut down suddenly in the spring of 2020. It looks like RRR enrolled in Berklee College of Music in 2018, so it would've been in the spring of sophomore year that the school sent all its students home.

RRR also speaks about struggling emotionally/mentally due to quarantine, so I am willing to bet that the pre-existing tensions between parent and child were exacerbated due to being cooped up together, which--as we know--just ended tragically.
