Defense seeks trial delay in fatal hate crime stabbing at U.Md.

Prince George’s County Circuit Court Judge Lawrence Hill Jr. hasn’t ruled on the defense request to postpone Sean Urbanski’s trial, which is scheduled to start July 22.

A California college student wants to be excused from testifying at the murder trial of an ex-boyfriend charged with a hate crime in a black student’s fatal stabbing on the University of Maryland’s campus.

Sean Urbanski’s former girlfriend, Kim Stringer, says he mistakenly believes she would testify that Urbanski, a 24-year-old white man, had no racial animus that would motivate him to commit a hate crime. Stringer doesn’t have any relevant testimony that would assist Urbanski’s defense, her attorney, Timothy Maloney, wrote in a court filing last week.

A hundred potential jurors convened Monday at Prince George’s County Circuit Court to field questions on race, bias and alcohol abuse that will help lawyers select a jury for the Severna Park man charged with the murder of a black college student and a hate crime.

Once assembled, the jury will hear about the death of Richard Collins III, a Bowie State University student and second lieutenant in the Army who was stabbed to death just days away from graduating. Sean Urbanski, a white, former University of Maryland student, is charged with first-degree murder and a hate crime in Collins’ May 2017 death.

A jury Wednesday found Sean Urbanski, 24, guilty of first-degree murder in the killing of Richard Collins III, a Bowie State student and a lieutenant in the U.S. Army.

In Maryland, the maximum penalty for a first-degree murder conviction is life in prison without the chance of parole. In a release, Braveboy said her office plans to seek the maximum penalty. Urbanski's sentencing is planned for April 16.
