MD MD - Pamela Conyers, 16, Glen Burnie, 16 Oct 1970

New to Websleuths and I'm probably an amateur compared to many here.

I had never heard of this case until January of this year, and stumbled across it by accident. I was getting new photo hint suggestions on Ancestry for a relative that was little more than a name in my tree. Normally, I might've glossed over them, but these photos caught my attention.

They were mugshots. Forrest Clyde Williams III was the 2nd cousin of my grandmother.

Discovering the case was a gut-punch, both because of the evil brutality of the murder and the fact that it was a fairly close relative, one that I didn't know. I'm pretty sure my grandmother knew his mother, Doris Hipes (who would've been 1st cousins with my great-grandmother); she spoke of an "Aunt Dot", which would've made sense because the age difference was more that of an Aunt and niece. My grandmother died in April of last year, one month after Williams was announced as a suspect. Luckily, the case didn't make headlines in WV, because she would've been devastated.

Since discovering the case, I've tried finding out as much as possible about it, with minimal success. I do suspect that not everything that AA County said about the other suspect, Donald Willard, was accurate (I detailed why in a reply in this thread), which could make it more difficult for them to get more information about him. I don't think he was 12-13 years older than Williams, I think he was 10 months younger. The information they gave about Williams was more accurate, but not entirely. He wasn't REALLY a carpenter, more of a secretary for the local union. For a few years before the murder, he would post a short condolence in the paper any time one of them died, probably a few every month; the last one with his name was on July 4th, 1969, 15 months before the murder of Pamela Conyers but 3 months before Joyce Malecki was abducted from the same mall. Malecki was exhumed for evidence this past December, and I think the parallels between these two cases are closer than the ones between Malecki and/or Sister Cesnik and/or Grace Montanye. I also think it would be easier for a serial killer to live life without ever feeling a shred of remorse than someone who committed one murder, especially one as horrific as this one. I would think that Williams (and/or Willard) would've had loose lips at least once. We'll see, though.
Update:

While one or both (Williams/Willard) are just as likely as anyone to have been involved in the Joyce Malecki murder, i no longer think they're more likely.

Using Google Earth, I marked where Pam Conyers was last seen/heard from, where she ended up, where they found her car, and where she was originally headed; I did the same for Malecki.

Whereas Pam was taken at the same place she was last seen and heard from, this wasn't the case for Joyce.

1) Last seen: Glen Burnie Mall. Several sources said she was last seen at Harundale Mall, where Pam went missing. This is what led to my suspicion that the same perpetrator(s) was/were responsible for both. Turns out this is not the case.

2) Headed: Fort Meade, where she was eventually found. Most of the time when I read about Joyce being exhumed, it was speculated that the catalyst was the positive ID of Pam's killer, due to them being taken at the same mall. This part never made sense to me; if being taken from the same mall was the connection, how did Joyce get to where she was going anyway?

3) Last heard: Pay phone at a gas station just outside of Fort Meade. This makes it even more likely that, even if they had been taken from the same mall, it was just a coincidence. The pay phone was about a 10 mile drive from the Glen Burnie Mall, and even if she were followed, there's a good chance she would've noticed (and not felt safe enough to stop at the pay phone).

Again, this doesn't rule Williams and/or Willard out, but without the mall as the common denominator, they're no more likely than anyone else.

Well, this is certainly odd. 7 years before he was a suspect, someone left Donald Willard's ashes on a doorstep at a church. It still had the tag from the crematory (which had since closed), which leads me to think that nobody claimed him and they just wanted to get rid of him. His niece claimed him (2nd video). It confirms, though, my suspicion that the police had the wrong age; he wasn't born around 1936, he was born in 1949, after Williams. The date of death matches the one on the death certificate, which also said that he was born in 1949, and the informant was the niece that claimed the ashes.

Paraphrasing, "He had a purpose and he was a human being". Yes, I suppose part of his purpose was to take the life of an innocent teenage girl. She had a purpose, too, but she never got to pursue it.

Yeah but that wasn't known at the time. Even if this guy hadn't committed the crime, they use "purpose" rather loosely. No wife, no kids, lived with his brother...

I’ve really been looking into this case and other local cases because of the incident that happened to me in 1986 in Old Mill. I lived in Millersville at the time and I was 12 years old. The neighborhood I lived in had community mailboxes and it was about 730pm that night and I went to check the mail and noticed a man, walking past the mailboxes watching me. I noticed his car, but I didn’t really think anything of it because I was so young and naïve. I started to walk back to my house and noticed the man keeping the same pace. I spotted him in the break where the sidewalk cut through the townhomes. By the time I got to my front door, I saw the same man standing at the fence watching me. But my naïve self still didn’t think a whole lot of it. I remember these dates because it was my brothers birthday. It was November 25, 1986. I needed to go to the store to get batteries for my one-year-old brothers Teddy Ruxpin. I went through the fence next to the apartments (as I usually did) and jogged the path that led to the back of the shopping center. Once I got to the back, I started walking and got about 60 feet and heard footsteps behind me—-so I started running. The SAME MAN was running behind me. So I went into Revco, through two sets of double doors and turned around and he was outside watching me. I was scared at this point and stayed in that store for an hour! I was too afraid to tell someone so I decided to take my quarter and use the pay phone on the corner and call my mom to come get me. I then waited inside the Highs and when she pulled up ran into the car. Once we left we saw the man come out from the middle of the shops. It was an L shaped center and he was hiding in the middle. I will never forget this guys face and am looking to find out who this man was. I know for a fact he was waiting for me and had I left to walk home I may not be here today. If anyone has any similar stories to this please message me.

I want to add to this since I was young, I have ALWAYS said this guy looked like John Saxon-from the show Falcon Crest-those EYES and a partial comb over is what I remember. What bothers me is the aged pic of Williams.

Williams probably looked more like the younger photo in 1986. That was also probably after he moved... 2 years before your incident he re-married in Botetourt County, VA, although his kids stayed behind in Maryland, so he probably went back and forth.

That's scary, good thing you knew well enough to stay inside. Can't say I've had an incident quite like that one. Probably the closest was when we were camping in WV when I was in high school. I hate camping (that's the last time I went)... I can't sleep and I'm a mosquito magnet. As usual, I wasn't sleeping well; in the middle of the night, my mom and grandmother noticed a silhouette that looked like someone bending down to unzip our tent. Well, they were smart enough to go sit in the car, but I thought they'd lost their minds and stayed there because I was desperate to get whatever sleep I could. (I did not get back to sleep.)

My sister had an incident a couple years ago with someone stalking her... With his car. My 3 year old nephew was in the backseat and my niece was in the womb.

I personally knew Pam Conyers. She lived a few houses from me. We both went to Glen Burnie High School. Pam was a nice girl from a nice family. She had two younger brothers. I don't remember much of the case because I was young; however, I do remember a few things. I would like to know who they suspected in this case and who the friends are that are dead. If I knew, I might be able to tell you if the guy at the link is "for real" or not.

What I remember: I was hanging out at the Harundale mall the night that Pam had gone there to pick up the shoe dye. I used to take the railroad tracks home from the Harundale Mall. I even walked this dark, back way that night. So, you would have thought that I was more at risk than Pam.

They surmised that Pam left her car door unlocked when she ran in to get the shoe dye. I think that she was buying the dye from the Thom McCann's shoe store.

There was a creepy guy who lived right across the street from Pam that we all suspected might have something to do with her murder. He would always leer at the girls. As I recall, Pam's bedroom window did not have a curtain on it; and we thought that he may have watched her get dressed and undressed at night. I think Pam used to babysit for his two young children, too.

If I recall correctly, this guy happened to be at the mall with his small dog the night in question. We surmised that he asked Pam for a ride home. The police canvassed the neighborhood; and we told him about this creepy guy. So, I'm sure that he was thoroughly investigated.

I knew no details of the case except that it was rumored (just like the link said) that they found pubic hair or hair that indicated that a black person may have been involved. I also thought that there was another rumor, something about a broom handle being used to rape her or something about a broom handle.

It was rumored that she was hit in the face, causing damage to the mouth area and teeth. I'm not sure how she was murdered.

I can remember being questioned by detectives at school. I was speculating that the killer wore gloves. I didn't know that the fingerprints were wiped clean in her car. Several students told detectives that I said that the killer wore gloves. My brother and a few neighborhood teens were known to the cops. So, I can see why they questioned me. It really scared me because I didn't know anything or anyone who would do such a thing.

Shortly after Pam's death, the family moved. I have no idea where they moved. I didn't realize that Pam was buried in Hattiesburg. Perhaps, that's where the family moved.

In any case, this case has always haunted me. I guess because I actually knew Pam and lived a few houses away.

This area was safe; and we lived in a safe neighborhood. It goes to show you that bad things happen everywhere.

I'd like to know if the police think that someone followed her from the pep rally or someone from her inner circle murdered her. I always thought that it was someone familiar with the area because of where her car and body were found.

I also didn't realize that they never found her underwear or keys. She was dressed (with sweater on inside out). So, perhaps, the killer dressed her or made her redress after he raped her. Sad, sad, sad...

If it were the killer who redressed her, which might be the case since the sweater was on inside out, could it be someone who knew her? What would be the purpose of redressing her--so a sex crime woudn't be suspected? Maybe, that's why her underwear were taken, too.

I thought that link said that they tested semen found on her underwear. I'll have to go and reread.

ETA: I found the original article that I have saved all these years. Here it is:

If the killer did get into her vehicle, the backseat and waited on her to return. Perhaps he had her drive to the spot her and her car was found.

If that is the case, he either lived in the area she was found so he could walk home, or he hitchhike out from the area. Not sure what the distance is from where she was last seen and where she was found.

I was thinking he could had have a vehicle already there where she was found so he could leave in it afterwards. But than i thought he would have had to had transportation to where she was last seen to take her from there.

So I will guess he lived close by where she was found, or hitchhiked out of the area.
Looking back and re-reading some of the older posts and these two had some good points. (It doesn't appear that one of these two accounts are active anymore.)

Her car was probably one of the last ones left in the lot that night. Power door locks were only an option in luxury cars at the time; the back doors could've been unlocked when she left the house and she wouldn't have even noticed, even if she locked the front door(s). She drove a 67 Dodge Monaco sedan, which had those peg door locks that were clearly visible from outside the car. A passer-by could tell if it was unlocked just by looking at the window. I doubt she was followed from home because neither suspect lived in her neighborhood, knew where she was going, or even that she was going anywhere.

I stumbled upon the case about Mary Kathleen Grant recently. It hit home because I am local and know all of these places. Some of my family members remember her from the skating rink. She was in the same area her boyfriends house was across from Marley Station Mall and her body was found so close to Pamela Conyers.

Also my mom grew up in Glen Burnie near the mall in the late 70s and said she was followed home from the bus stop by a creepy man before. Was there just a bunch of bad guys killing and stalking young teenage girls or was it one person doing all this?

Jeez. I've been hearing more and more about these types of incidents in that area. Makes me wonder if my relative was only involved in just the one incident.

I always wonder what our missing children/adults would have contributed to the world if they had stayed among the living. The link below has a comment from Pamela's cousin. The impact on her, and her family, is obvious.

The link doesn't work anymore, but I'd be interested to hear what they said. I've only heard from Pamela's niece, who was interviewed on podcast around 2017. Nothing since the suspects were ID'd, but can you blame them? Can't even imagine how painful it's been for all of them.

He might not be connected to Sister Cathy Cesnik, but I'll be interested to see whether they'll link him to Joyce or any others in the future. His DNA is in CODIS, that's really important.

Sleep well, Pamela. At least your loved ones have at least one fewer questions, now.
That was originally my worry, that he'd be linked to Joyce, but the further it gets from when she was exhumed, the less likely it was that it was him. They would've gotten a match by now. They're probably going through the same genealogy process with someone that wasn't in their system, if they found anything new.

As far as some of the others, I don't know what DNA they found or if they've ruled either of these two out.
