Carolyn Welt Brown, 47, prominent in local society and a woman of "exceeding popularity," continued up Limerock Street, passing the courthouse and Knox County Jail and made it to somewhere near the corner of Limerock and Broad streets.

It was here that someone came up behind her and struck her on the head with a club, which was actually a two-and-a-half-foot-long birch sled stake. It had been removed from the theater van in post office square.

She was dragged off the street, leaving a bloody trail in the snow. She was dealt more blows with the club and possibly choked. Her jaw was broken, her skull was fractured and she died. Her clothing was disarranged.

The murderer left footprints at the scene believed to be size 9 or 10. He also left the murder weapon. Her hat and pocketbook would be found nearby. The pocketbook still contained one dollar bill and some coins.

What an odd mystery. This part really got to me...
The investigation had been derailed. Other clues also led nowhere. For a while the police were interested in the source of a piece of bloody clothing found in a wheel rut in the street near the scene of the incident, only to have Miss Catherine Lynn, a local tailoress, testify that she had seen the garment there the day before the murder took place.
Bloody clothing was that common on the streets of Rockport ME?

Sometimes it seems the history of our country is one long series of unsolved murders.

It really is only recently that the tools for solving crimes definitively came to exist.

Just over 100 years ago. Makes one wonder if the perpetrator was ever caught for another similar crime. For him to be so violent and insensitive, he probably had done the same sort of thing before and after.
