Found Deceased ME - Timothy Clauge, 39, from NH, kayak found overturned, Standish, Cumberland Co., 7 Jun 2019

STANDISH, Maine — First responders are actively searching for a New Hampshire man who went missing early Friday morning near Watchic Lake in Standish.

The Cumberland County Sheriff's Department said 39-year-old Timothy Clauge of Nottingham, N.H. was last seen getting in his kayak on Watchic Lake after midnight on Friday.

Police said he was in town for a weekend birthday celebration and arrived late Thursday night.

Someone who lives nearby found and recovered Clauge's kayak overturned on the lake, according to police.

Police said Clauge is white, about 6 feet tall, and about 200 pounds with brown hair and blue eyes.

Why would Timothy go kayaking at midnight after just arriving to the town?

I live on a lake in NH- there are those night kayakers, canoers, swimmers, and folks fishing late at night.

You have to watch the current on the lakes. So many people think lakes are always calm, especially at night. Believe it or not, there are times when it's windy out, and the water can cause waves similar to a low tide on the ocean. My daughter tried to go out in her kayak last week when it was just breezy out and had to turn around and come back, as she couldn't get very far- the current was working against her.

I got thrown out of my canoe in NH last summer mostly from waves created by a passing boat on our lake. I hate to preach but you really have to wear a life jacket in rough conditions or at night when in a small boat. Watchic is a small lake but it only takes a few feet to drown...I wonder if he could swim.

I always bring a noodle with me as well. Call me crazy, but it's nice to have a back up flotation item just in case. After living on a lake for 19 years, you learn to respect it just as much as the ocean and river. Lakes are not always serene and calm, and the current can really wear you out, especially if you are alone, when paddling.

Oh and yes, you always have to be aware of the wake the boaters cause- even far away from you, the waves can send you over before you even know it's happening.

Yeah, even on a pond one day when I was paddle boarding in Maine it was more intense then the times I went in the ocean. I was surfing. No boats, either.

So glad that at least his body was recovered, I can imagine until that happens no matter what the circumstances of the disappearance is, that a small part of the family holds out hope.
