A Flagstaff couple has been missing since Thanksgiving Day after going kayaking in Mexico.

Corey Allen and Yeon-Su Kim were kayaking in Rocky Point at about 1 p.m. on Thursday, but haven't been seen since, according to posts on social media. They were with their 14-year-old daughter when winds picked up in the area. Allen reportedly brought the daughter back to shore, then went back out for Kim, but that was the last time either was seen.

Crews have been searching in the area since late Thursday. The daughter is reportedly safe.

Allen is a realtor with Coldwell Banker Northland in Flagstaff and Kim is the executive director of the School of Forestry at Northern Arizona University.

ROCKY POINT, MEXICO (3TV/CBS 5) - A massive search in Rocky Point, Mexico, has been underway for a Flagstaff couple who went missing on Thanksgiving while kayaking in rough waters.

Yeon-Su Kim is a professor at Northern Arizona University, and her husband, Corey Allen, is a real estate agent. Because the search is happening south of the border - locals who don’t even know the couple has jumped in to help find them. The couple has two teenage children, and their daughter was with them at the time. Family and search coordinators say Corey took her back to shore when strong winds came up before going to help his wife.

As an NAU forestry professor and a prominent real estate agent, Kim and Allen are a major part of the Flagstaff community. “They are just the nicest family. I mean, I know you interview people and people tell you that, but they really are. They are so lovely and warm and engaging,” said their friend Bryn DeFusco.

My heart sank when I read that the couple were “kayaking in rough waters.”

More disheartening details:

“According to family and search crews, the couple went missing around 1 p.m. on Thanksgiving when the two and their 14-year-old daughter started kayaking on a beach near Rocky Point.

Locals said not only was it windy that day but there was an extreme reverse tide that can change the shoreline level quickly. It was enough for Corey to become concerned about his daughter. “Corey Allen took his daughter back to the shoreline and back to the rental house, and he was going back to help his wife,” said Tavane McCombs, who has been coordinating the local search efforts.

Search coordinators said when he didn’t return home with Kim or their kayaks, their daughter ran to a neighboring home to ask for help.”

Key concern:
Did these kayaks have flotation (air) bags or some other form of flotation? Or were they sit-on-top kayaks that were unsinkable?
Were they wearing good quality life vests?
Both of those things certainly increase survivability.
Off chance they were able to get to shore and are hunkered down somewhere.

Jake Bacon-FaceBook:

Below is the latest update from the search team after today’s search for Corey and Yeon-Su. After the conference call tonight, this is the 11/26 Update from Nina Allen and Ethan Aumack: “First and foremost, thank you so many times over to all who have contributed so generously of your time and resources to this search. Corey and Yeon-Su are now 54 hours overdue. Volunteers have spent the last two days flying, boating, and searching overland , with no sightings as of yet. The Mexican Navy is contributing resources via air and water, which is very helpful. We intend to continue the search tomorrow, focusing as much resources as possible on flights across a search area south of Puerto Peñasco. The 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬 donations which have been so generously donated so far will be used to support more pilots getting up in the air, and to support others who have been supporting the search or may be able to, with additional resources. Any and all funds not used in the search itself will be used to support the family / Corey and Yeon-Su’s kids. Many thanks to all who have given so much. We remain hopeful.”

I've been following.

It's so unfair and tragic.

I was wondering if a kayak itself always stay afloat. Answer is no....it will sink if filled with water, particularly in choppy seas or heavy rainfall.

From FaceBook
Tavane McCombs, one of the organizers of the search shared this confirmation of facts with me moments ago… “Maru and I have now confirmed the body has been 100 percent identified as Mrs .Allen. This morning around 9 Am sun the 27 of Nov a body was spotted floating 8 miles off of Mayan place by a ponga boat. The Marines were call out to retrieve the body. A boat from our search team was sent out to confirm but missed the boat. We asked for photos to confirm the body. The Navy, police or our search team received the photos to confirm. However the news was leaked before anything was confirmed by all agencies working together. At approximately 3:15 today our search team was notified the sister in law Nina Allen confirmed it was Mrs. Allen We called our boats back from the area. We send our condolences to the family but can assure them we have not stop the search for Corey Allen. At this moment we still have plans in the air and more help coming tonight and tomorrow. I would ask the community to please check with Maru or myself any questions about the on going search as to avoid unnecessary drama. We need to stay on the front line to process facts for the search teams. The update will be aired on channel 3,news. Thank you for everyone helping and supporting us . God speed.” The search continues for Corey. This is the news that so many of us hoped not to receive. As a community we must continue to rally to support

Oh this is such sad news, tragically expected at this point but nonetheless awful. Will they not attempt to find the body and return her to her family to be properly buried? If she was floating (ugh) one would think that she would still be out there and able to be found before she sinks...I felt sick writing that. The poor daughter...I hope that she is getting trauma counseling and immediate therapy. It's so critical in those early days to address.

I believe it was Mrs Allen that was found and Mr Allen is still missing.

The family of a missing Flagstaff man is planning to call off their search parties after his kayak was found abandoned Wednesday.

Periódico De Frente, a local news outlet, reported a second kayak was allegedly found with Allen's kayak Wednesday afternoon.

As a result of the recent discovery, Allen's family has decided to conclude volunteer search parties.

"We understand that ending the coordinated search is the right thing to do, given the likelihood Corey’s body will not be recovered," the family wrote in a statement.
