A German cyclist has gone missing in the Mexican state of Chiapas during a pan-American trip. On Sunday, Holger Franz Hagenbusch's brother has failed to hear from the cyclist for 11 days. "He is cycling in Mexico. His last location was San Cristobal. His destination was Ciudad del Carmen, but he never arrived there."

The 43-year-old cyclist was planning to travel throughout Latin America, after which he would continue to Africa.

Body of Polish cyclist, German's bike found in Mexico

MEXICO CITY
Authorities in southern Mexico have found a body they believe is that of a Polish cyclist, as well as a bicycle and a shoe belonging to a missing German man.

The body and personal articles were found at the bottom of a 600-foot (200-meter) drop off the side of a rural highway in the southern state of Chiapas.

Assistant state prosecutor Arturo Lievano said late Thursday that DNA tests are planned to confirm the identity of the body.

Arturo Lievano said late Thursday that clothing and other articles indicate it's that of Krzysztof Chmielewski.

Lievano said his injuries indicate the cause of death was an accident.

[...]

The victim had been dead for almost a week when the body was found April 26.

He said the search continues for the body of a German identified as Holger Franz Hagenbusch. The two were apparently biking together on the narrow road.

Hagenbusch had biked across a number of countries. Lievano said the German's bike did not show signs of any collision with another vehicle.

Here‘s an English article:

Cyclist’s body found in same ravine as remains of fellow traveler

The body of German cyclist Holger Franz Hagenbusch was found yesterday in the same Chiapas ravine where the decomposed body of a Polish traveler was found on April 26.

Assistant state prosecutor Arturo Liévano Flores said forensic specialists discovered the 43-year-old man’s remains 200 meters from where Krzysztof Chmielewski-Podróznik was found last week.

[...]

Clothes belonging to the cyclist were also found, Liévano said in a video statement.

[...]

A bus driver who works on the San Cristóbal-Ocosingo route told the newspaper El Universal that he saw the two European cyclists riding together on April 20, the same day that forensic specialists determined that Chmielewski had died.

Liévano said Thursday that there appeared to be no foul play involved in the death of the 37-year-old Pole and that its cause was head trauma.

The assistant prosecutor said yesterday that investigations into both men’s deaths are continuing and that their respective embassies are being kept up-to-date with any advances.

The two bodies are currently being held in Ocosingo awaiting collection and repatriation by family members.

Why do people continue to travel to these areas of Mexico? It has proven time & time again to be fatal. I feel very sorry for these cyclists who were experiencing an exhilarating trip of a lifetime, but I truly question their mindsets deciding to bike through this country. Mind you, I have been to Mexico 6 times in 6 years, including this year, but on the carbbean coast in a heavily touristed area and NEVER ventured out on our own, always on a tour bus. I mean, common sense.

Mexico says round-the-world cyclists were murdered

Talking to BBC Mundo, Mr Sánchez said the assailants were probably trying to cover their tracks. "Those that did this wanted to make it appear like an accident, so they put the bike there, but they made a mistake and used the German's bike," he said.

Krzysztof Chmielewski (l) and Holger Hagenbusch had spent years travelling the world on bikes
Krzysztof Chmielewski, 37, was a Polish citizen and had been travelling the world by bike for three years.
He had visited 51 countries and in the last year he had been to Canada and the US, before arriving in Mexico. He was planning to continue south all the way to Argentina, and had almost made it to Guatemala when he was killed.
Holger Hagenbusch, a 43-year-old German, was also an experienced cyclist. He had been to 34 countries and had been travelling by bike for four years, according to his blog.

"Justice for Holger and Krzysztof" - a sign held during a protest in San Cristobal de las Casas last week
Mr Sánchez told the BBC: "We think that they were travelling short distance from each other, maybe one was assaulted first ... and then the second one arrived and they were both captured."

Agree! Jenny Chen’s is another case that is both heartbreaking and maddening. Disappeared two years ago hitchhiking alone in Mexico!

Om my God, that is just awful. May they both rest in peace. Just biking, and someone harms them like that! I hope they catch whoever did that to them. Thank goodness those cyclists questioned the cause of death- they obviously knew that turn wasn't enough to cause two men to die like that.

My husband travels to Mexico on business. The company has personal security officers who pick him up at the airport and drive him anywhere he needs to go. He’s either in his hotel room, at the work site, having meals with his clients all while being chauffeured around by personal security. I still worry until he’s on the plane to come home.

The real Mexico - not talking about vacation destinations - is very dangerous. I have a friend from Mexico who won’t drive from Texas to Mexico City. She said people are carjacked, robbed and murdered all the time. Homicide rate for 2017 was almost 30,000. That doesn’t include all the missing persons who might’ve been dissolved in acid.

Such a horrific end for these two friends.

And WTH were the Mexican authorities trying to pull? ‘Well, it looks like an accident.’ Yeah, right.... With a gunshot, decapitation and amputation. OMG
Their poor family.

Oh my God how horrible!

Rest in Peace Holger!

I was in Mexico on vacation in the same area they were murdered in 1991 with my then-boyfriend who was a very adventurous type, always exploring and going on long walks etc, way out of the tourist spots. I had no clue then that Mexico is so dangerous. :scared:
