Circumstances of Disappearance:
Chmielowski was last seen by his sister around 3 p.m. at Jelitkowo beach in in Gdańsk, Poland, on July 11, 1951. He told his sister he was going kayaking with a woman he had just met but never returned. Later that day, a man claiming to be the fiancé of the unknown woman had come forward with Chmielowski's clothes, claiming both he and the woman had drowned. The drowning site was combed by divers but Chmielowski was never located.
Chmielowski was a sailor and at the time, he was being sought by the Security Service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Prior to his disappearance, he had been summoned for interrogation three times but was uncooperative.
It was later discovered that the alleged fiancé of the unknown woman was a collaborator of the Security Service. It was then the border guards conducted searches, claiming Chmielowski could have possibly fled abroad.
Shortly after his disappearance, his sister reported that a message appeared on Radio Free Europe saying "the young man from Oliwa tells his family that he is alive."
Years later in 1968, a colleague from the Maritime School recognized Chmielowski in the city of Tampico in the Gulf of Mexico. There have been other unconfirmed sightings of him in Mexico as late as the 1970's, but his whereabouts remain unknown.
