On the Body''

''Ecorse police are still trying to identify a body found floating in the Detroit River more than two years ago and they hope a distinct tattoo will help.

According to a recent Facebook post from Downriver and Friends, a community group dedicated to supporting the Downriver area, a unique tattoo, barely legible and located on the right forearm, just might help law enforcement identify this John Doe. He had been dead for about a week when the body was found.

The tattoo contains yellow and green graffiti lettering with splotches of orange as well as a word that reads “GeRARd”, “get rabid” or “Great Arsenal” with an image of a star at the beginning of the words.

The case was originally reported to Detroit police on Aug. 28, 2021, but due to the body’s location on the east side of Mud Island, Ecorse police took over. Mud Island, a little over 18 acres in size, is in Wayne County and is part of the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge.''

''According to NamUs, the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System, the person was a white male about 5 feet 9 inches tall. He had short hair and weighed around 150 pounds. He is estimated to be between the ages 30 and 45, and he was found wearing a purple pattern bathing suit.

Anyone with information is asked to contact NamUs Regional Program Specialist Lori Bruski at (817) 718-7904.''

''With no obvious signs of trauma, stab wounds or bullet holes on the body, police don’t believe the man was a victim of foul play. He is white, about 5 feet 9 inches tall, weighed around 150 pounds and had short hair.

Police have tried to match this John Doe with people recently reported missing in the area, but have not been able to determine the man’s identity.''

''Based on the condition of the remains, Sassak estimates the body had been in the water for six or seven days.

Sassak said the man was found unclothed, except for a purple-pattern swimsuit, as well as shreds of a white T-shirt. That leads police to believe he may have been swimming.

One thing that may help police to identify the victim is a large, distinctive tattoo on the inside of his forearm. The tattoo has yellow and green graffiti lettering, with splotches of orange that divide the two colors.

“It was hard for us to read, so I went to a couple of tattoo shops,” Sassak said.

In showing a photo of the tattoo to a tattoo artist, Sassak was surprised that the person immediately recognized the words as “Great Arsenal.” An image of a star is found at the beginning of the words.

“There’s nobody missing in our area with a tattoo like that,” Sassak said.''

Bodies can sometimes float for long distances in the river, so it’s possible this person died near a community along Lake St. Clair, or perhaps on the Canadian side of the Detroit River.''
