A Michigan doctor has been found dead under the ice of a frozen pond, five days after going missing from his nearby home.

Blackman-Leoni Public Safety (BLDPS) confirmed that divers had recovered the body of Dr. Bolek Payan "from a pond on the property near his residence" around 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

"After not locating anything on land, holes were cut in the ice of a pond on the property yesterday and divers located Dr. Payan's body under the ice today," the BLDPS said.

Payan was last seen exiting his home Thursday afternoon, via password-protected security cameras that detectives were able to eventually gain access to on Monday, authorities said...

His untimely and unfortunate death is a terrible tragedy. I will be awaiting the results of the autopsy to find out the cause and manner of death.

they have video from his home camera of him leaving... hard to word this properly and delicately, but I wonder if anyone can determine a state of mind from the video. I.e., was he crying? in a hurry? bundled up for a quick walk?

no matter, terribly sad and I am not sure if this would be better to hear it was deliberate or an accident. I hope his loved ones are gentle with themselves as they move forward from this tragedy.

Oh, how awful for the Doctor to die under such harsh conditions as freezing temperatures and asphyxiation while on his own property. Why would one wish to walk on ice during wintry conditions? If it's true the icy pond had patches of water the day before he went missing, then perhaps he was unaware of soft spots in the ice.

Icy waters are not easily unsurvivable for any length of time really, especially when one is alone.

It's a harsh and very painful situation that seems one would not plan for oneself to endure.

I am so sorry for the incredible loss of this special health professional. May he be with Peace and his loved ones have understanding.

As to why he'd walk out onto the pond, we don't know his background. I went to school in a state that's frozen solid half the year. Trust me when I say, in some of these states, walking out on ponds or lakes in the winter is a daily occurrence. We all hear the horror stories, but it doesn't deter people. I remember wanting to jump out of my friend's truck when he said we were going to drive on the lake. I thought for sure we'd fall through. We didn't. We drove out to the middle of the lake and goofed around and in a crowd of about 10 of us, I was the only person freaking out.

I hope we find out what happened to the doctor. My heart aches for his family and loved ones.

This is so very sad. I'm afraid we will find out this is self-harm. He made sure his dogs were looked after, he didn't abandon them in the house. He grew up in the Midwest, he was probably aware of the dangers of ice in the winters.

@DeDee, I haven't seen an article stating the cause of death yet, just pending autopsy and toxicology. Could you link where you found that? TIA.

As stated many times in his obituary, Oh Bolek! What a great loss to this world. So many who work in psychiatry are drawn to help those who struggle with similar issues. This was my impetus as well as many of my colleagues. My heart goes out to his family, friends, co-workers, and patients.
