In a one-on-one interview with 7 Action News, Joe Nicolai, brother of now deceased father and radio anchor Jim Matthews, describes Friday’s nightmarish tragedy on Bayview Drive.

Chesterfield Police were called to the Bayview Drive condo at noon when the 35-yeaer-old mother who lives there with the family escaped the home with stab wounds, cradling her five year old daughter.

Police say when they went into the home they found the mother’s life partner and father to their children, 57-year-old Jim Matthews, dead.

‘Not Even Something You’d See in a Horror Movie’: Gruesome Details Emerge in Attack that Left Michigan News Anchor Dead and His Family Hospitalized

Horrific new details have emerged in the death of a Michigan news anchor who was killed inside of his home last week. The attack, which also left his 10-year-old son in critical condition and his girlfriend and 5-year-old daughter hospitalized, is believed to be an attempted murder-suicide carried out by a man who visited the family.

Jim Matthews, the overnight anchor at Detroit radio station WWJ-AM for nearly seven years, was murdered in his home Friday following a violent “domestic situation,” authorities say.

"The man charged with killing Michigan overnight news anchor Jim Matthews, 57, visited the victim's girlfriend up to four times a week while the newscaster slept after his night shifts, neighbors say.

Arthur Williamson, 55, was charged with the murder of Matthews after he allegedly beat him to death on Friday before stabbing Matthews' girlfriend and injuring his son, 10, and daughter, 5.

State records indicate Williamson had a lengthy criminal history dating back 30 years with convictions on charges of kidnapping and assault among others.

While the relationship between Williamson and Matthews, who worked for WWJ NewsRadio 950, remains unclear, neighbors said the man is known to visit the household up to four times a week while Matthews slept after returning from his overnight shifts."

  • Assault.
  • Kidnapping.
  • Assault with intent to commit murder.
  • Illegal weapons possession along with drugs
  • Assaulting, resisting, and obstructing a police officer.

So he went over to the victim's gf's house at 4am, she let him in, they went to talk in her bedroom, they never dated but "they just do drugs together"? Hm.

It's heartbreaking to read that the 10-yr-old boy literally tried to save his father's life and pull the killer off his dad. What a brave boy, and what a horrible trauma he will have to endure the rest of his life. I hope he and his 5-yr-old sister are under the care of kind people who don't do drugs & invite over ex-cons in the middle of the night with hammers and knives.

Before a Macomb County judge on Thursday sentenced a Pontiac man to life in prison for killing a WWJ news anchor and assaulting his family, prosecutors made him watch a video of police rescuing the 10-year-old boy he had tied up and hit with a hammer.

The video showed the officers finding WWJ anchor Jim Matthews’ body on the ground in his Chesterfield Township home and their desperation to find Matthews’ son, who they knew was in the house somewhere...
