John Alan Vandemark, who was living on the northeast side of town a few blocks south of Ithaca High School, was last seen Feb. 14, sheriff’s officials said Wednesday.

“Please check your garages and sheds, as well as any door cameras for Mr. Vandemark,” officials asked Ithaca residents in an update Thursday. “He may have possibly been wearing an insulated flannel, unknown color.”

Vandemark does not have a vehicle and was most likely on foot, they said.

Maybe history of MI/drug use/early onset dementia? If outside in the cold, unable to find his way back home, I can see why he would have been seeking shelter.

A massive search conducted by the Gratiot County Sheriff’s Office, several other area law enforcement agencies and volunteers still haven’t turned up any clues regarding the whereabouts of a 65-year-old Ithaca man who has been missing for nearly six weeks.

John Vandemark was last seen on Feb.11 and was reported missing on Feb. 14.

On Saturday the sheriff’s office and a group of about 50 volunteers conducted a coordinated search of the city and surrounding area but Vandemark was not located.

“Search teams searched on foot as well as ATV’s in areas based on lost person behavior and the process to determine probabilities if Vandemark had walked away from his residence,” Sheriff Mike Morris stated in a press release.

Found deceased.

The search ended with deputies discovering Vandemark’s body about 1:15 p.m. on Wednesday, April 12. In a press release, Undersheriff Steve Sopocy said Vandemark was found in Hamilton Township, several miles from his last known location, and had been dead for some time.

No foul play is suspected and an autopsy is planned to determine the cause and manner of Vandemark’s death.
