Circumstances of Disappearance
On September 28, 1994, Khristine Smith disappeared. She and her husband had been married for eight years and lived in Kalamazoo, Michigan, with their 7-year-old daughter.
Smith told neighbors that his wife had run off with another man. But neighbors who knew Khris couldn't believe that she would leave behind her daughter. Two days after Khris disappeared, neighbors became suspicious when Smith backed up a boat and trailer into his garage. Smith didn't have a boat, and they wondered why Smith was being so secretive. At this point, they began to suspect foul play.
In December of 1998, Smith pleaded guilty to the second-degree murder of Khristine Smith. Smith said that on the morning in question, his wife put their daughter on the school bus and then returned home. Smith told police he and Khris had started arguing. She threatened to leave with their daughter, and as a result, he retrieved his gun and shot her twice in the head.
Her body has never been found, but Smith told investigators that he dumped the murder weapon and his wife's body in Maumee Bay east of Toledo, Ohio.
As part of his plea bargain, Smith agreed to help detectives find her body. But during a day of searching on Lake Erie, they found nothing.
Smith was sentenced to 35 to 70 years in prison.
