Kindergarten student brings Jose Cuervo mix to class in Livonia, shared it with 4 others (clickondetroit.com)

School officials say disciplinary measures will be taken

LIVONIA, Mich. – Parents were outraged after an elementary school student reportedly brought alcohol to class and had other students drink it.

Local 4 News is told that a kindergarten student at Grand River Academy in Livonia shared the alcoholic drink with four other students. The child reportedly brought a small plastic bottle of alcohol with more than 10% alcohol in it.

Parents were baffled at how something like this could happen. The school immediately contacted the parents of the five students that were involved...

I’m humming that song by Shelly West.....

“Jose Cuervo you are a friend of mine
I like to drink you with a little salt and lime
Every time we get together
I sure have a good time....”

Who's this cowboy, sleeping beside me?
He's pretty cute,
but how'd I get his shirt on?

I had too much tequila last night!

Everyday in this country in Catholic schools, there is a mass where most 2nd graders and older thru high school drink the wine that was changed to the blood of Christ. Never is a problem in all the years I know of!!!!!!

That would only be a small sip of wine, which is allowed under a religious exemption for minors to sip or taste wine when it is part of a religious service.

Wine and "Takillya" are way different.

My grandmom who'd be 98 if alive. My mother is 82. I'm 62. All Catholic. None of us were ever offered wine during Mass. I've never been to a Catholic Church in my life where anyone, but the Priest drinks the wine during consecration. I'm sure it happens, but probably the Evangelical's. JMO

As for Altar Servers who used to be boys only it was a thing where they'd sneak some.

Imagine the health hazard all these people drinking out of one Chalice. The Quervo would probably get rid of germs though.

I don't even think it's actually alcoholic, is it?
Certainly the one in my (not catholic) church isn't.

According to my brother, Uncles, Great Uncles, and friends who were Altar Boys it was. Then again who knows? Nobody served Mass drunk. Well, maybe a Priest.

Out of curiosity how do they sanitize the Chalice in your Church? Asking because years ago they stopped having us kiss the Cross on Good Friday. They also stopped people kissing First Class relics of Saints.

Meanwhile there were some kids hitting the Takillya mix in class. Glad they are OK. If they had a Nun from the old days that wouldn't have went down. Yikes, no!

Either way, parents sending their children to Catholic school know this is going to happen!

Parent who enroll, but do not want their child to participate in Mass -- arrive at 9:15 on Mass days.

This kid apparently just decided to share!

Re: chalice -- some congregations offer intinction, where the bread/wafer is dipped into the wine/juice. One result is no lips on the chalice.

Hopefully, no harm done to the Kinders in this situation.

In the Roman Rite of the Catholic Church, Communion is administered under the form of wine either by the communicant drinking directly from the chalice or by intinction. In the latter manner, the priest partially dips the consecrated bread into the consecrated wine and then places it in the mouth of the communicant.

The majority of liturgical churches, such as the Catholic Church and Eastern Orthodox Church, require that sacramental wine should be pure grape wine. Other Christian churches, such as the Methodist Churches, disapprove of the consumption of alcohol, and substitute grape juice for wine (see Christian views on Sacramental wine - Wikipedia

In the Cincinnati area, the priest holds out a chalice for each person (usually kids are at least 7 years old) to take a sip. It is definitely actual wine, not grape juice.

This custom of the common cup was suspended during COVID but is set to resume later this month per the Cincinnati archdiocese.

I’m not Catholic but have attended mass many times with friends in the past.

BTW on the historical front, at the time of Prohibition in the USA -- The Methodist Church had a bishop named Welch.

Yup, Welch.

I grew up in Protestant churches where we were served grape juice. So the first time I attended a Catholic mass I was surprised that it was wine. I was a young teenager, and I attended with one of my friends.

The drinking from the common cup grossed me out though, so I opted for the single-serve option. I whispered to my friend when I saw everyone was drinking out of the same cup, that I was not going to do that. He showed me how to signal the priest by discretely holding two fingers pointed down, and then the priest would offer me my own small cup.

After the mass he assured me that the alcohol in the wine killed any germs. I didn’t care, and I never participated in the common cup.
