MI - Na'Ziyah Harris, 13, Detroit, 9 Jan 2024 *arrest*

Butts was in court Friday for 3 preliminary hearings. The videos are horrifying, and it's just the beginning.

DETROIT (WXYZ) — Today, Jarvis Butts entered a 36th District Court courtroom for three separate preliminary hearings.

(In the Na'Ziyah Harris case)
In all, 22 witnesses are expected to testify. Only one witness took the stand on Friday.

In the other two cases, Judge Aliyah Sabree ordered Butts to stand trial on 1st-degree criminal sexual conduct.

7 News Detroit didn't record those alleged victims during their testimony.

(Note: A 13-year old girl testified that he SA her when she was 4. A 20-year-old woman testified that the same thing happened to her when she was 8 and 10. At the time, he had just been released from prison after nearly 10 years after assaulting another child.)

During his arraignment, he was also charged in the sexual assault of two other children, including his own daughter and the daughter of an ex-girlfriend.

"It’s disgusting, it’s despicable. It's worse than I thought it was," Jarnell Holland, a family member of Harris said after the court hearing. "I've been trying to bring attention to him since 2022 and I did not realize it was this bad."

Witness testimony will resume on Jan. 6, 2025, and an additional 21 witnesses are expected to take the stand.

The court went on lunch break around noon.

Before that, the Wayne County Prosecutor called several witnesses to the stand during Monday's hearing. It's the second hearing in the case after Butts first appeared in court in November.

Witnesses called to testify Monday morning include Na'Ziyah Harris's grandmother Anette Harris, who talked about Jarvis Butts' coming to her home and the day the teenager went missing.

Shannon Harris, who was the victim's aunt, also testified. She has five children with Butts and spoke about instances where the suspect would pick Na'Ziyah Harris and take her to his job at an auto shop.

The third witness was Marilyn Lee, a substitute teacher who taught at JE Clark Preparatory Academy, where Na'Ziyah Harris went to school. She taught the day Harris was last seen and testified not seeing the teenager the next day, despite regular visits during the week in school.

Na'Ziyah's grandmother, Annette Harris, testified that she dropped her off at school on the morning of Jan. 9, 2024, and then searched around the neighborhood and her school when she never returned home.

Another witness, TaLasha Moore, testified seeing Na'Ziyah that afternoon in Ypsilanti with Butts and his business partner, Cordell Wright, who told the court in November. Moore said they were at her home to drop off her mother's car. While Moore said she didn't realize who Na'Ziyah was at the time, she eventually found out it was her when police knocked on her door much later.

On the stand today in 36th District Court was the teenager's aunt, who was in a dating relationship with Butts and has five children with him.

Shannon Harris testified that after her niece went missing, she found inappropriate Instagram messages between Na'Ziyah and Butts.

Na'Ziyah Harris Case: Jarvis Butts preliminary hearing continues

The third day of the preliminary hearing of Jarvis Butts continues Tuesday as the prosecution calls on more witnesses in the case of Na'Ziyah Harris. Butts is accused of murdering her to cover up a pregnancy.

JAN 7, 2025
He was tracked to the Rouge River in Detroit the day after her disappearance, where police would later recover the clothes Harris was last seen wearing. Authorities said there was damage to the clothing that could indicate a struggle.

The mother of one of Butts’ daughters spoke in court on Monday. She said Butts used her car twice, on Jan. 9, 2024, and the following day. She said he came to her house at 9 p.m. that night to borrow her car and brought it back the following morning. When she got her car back, her son found a pair of clear glasses in the backseat of the car. At that time, she was with Butts at the auto shop when her son discovered the glasses. When she took the glasses from her son, she said Butts took the glasses out of her hands and said they belonged to his son. Na’Ziyah’s last known photo shows her wearing a pair of clear glasses; however, she could not testify that those were her glasses. He reportedly borrowed her car again on Jan. 10, 2024, and brought it back a few hours later.

The recording of the over two-hour interview Mays and his partner, Lisa Johnson, conducted on Feb. 15, 2024, was released in court. In the recording, Mays asked Butts if he knew who Na’Ziyah was and showed a picture of her.

In the recorded interview, Butts said he had a legal issue in Clinton Township on Jan. 9, 2024. Mays testified he did not confirm if that was true. Butts also said Na’Ziyah would occasionally come to his auto shop to work, as well as his own daughter. Mays testified he did not confirm if that was true

OP says last seen near Outer Drive.....(awfully strange coincidence)

Workers were at the home in the 19700 block of Woodingham near Outer Drive renovating the house when they found the remains buried in a shallow grave around 1 p.m.

It is unclear if the remains belonged to an adult or child. According to police, the remains appear to be from a person who had a small stature, so they are looking at both missing adults and children.

(Any Sleuths happen to know if Butts had any connection to Woodingham home?)

Wondering more and more if this could be her.
What a miracle if she is found while the prelim hearing is going on!

I've been wondering why I couldn't find Bird on the map. I believe "Bird" in this first article should be "Berg." And that means they've tied his phone to the location where Naziyah's clothing was found.

... When she was a forensic technician back in March 2024, she found a pink jumpsuit, a black hoodie with white headphones in the pocket, gloves, a towel and a pair of black and white gym shoes in the area of 7 Mile and Bird.

Erica Anderson from Michigan State Police testified she tested the DNA samples on the items found on 7 Mile and Berg, as well as mattress pad cuttings known to be owned by Butts.

By looking at his location from his phone calls, police gathered Butts' phone was allegedly in the area where Na’Ziyah was last seen and the area of 7 Mile and Berg.

@SluethinAway, this is a 14 minute drive from where the human remains were found.

When the defense asked Davis about how Butts was around his phone, she said he was very secretive. That was because he was talking to other women at the time.

However, Davis stayed with him because he was good with children, she told the court. o_O
  • Na’Ziyah took the bus to school, and there is video of her boarding the school bus.
  • Na’Ziyah used a DPS issued tablet and communicated with an app.
  • She took one last picture of herself on the tablet.
  • She also sent a message to Butts, indicating that they would be meeting up after she got out of school.
  • There is video of her getting out of school at the end of the day in the same clothes.
  • She meets Butts and a co-worker and goes back to their auto repair shop on Connor in Detroit, where she is seen by Butts’s sister. Sometime after 4 p.m. per phone records.
  • Butts, the co-worker, and Na’Ziyah were in the co-worker’s car when they went to Ypsilanti (between 4 p.m. and a little before 7:30 p.m.), and then returned to the shop on Connor between 8:22 p.m. and 9 p.m.. Butts’ phone places him at these locations.
  • At 9:30 p.m. to 12:20 p.m. Butts checked in to Parkcrest Inn in Harper Woods. A receipt and his phone confirm this. Two witnesses testified that Butts would take women there to have sex.
  • Na’Ziyah is never seen again after January 9, 2024.
  • An exhibit showed Butts' phone between 11:40 p.m. on Jan. 10 and 1:30 a.m. on Jan. 11 near the area of 7 Mile and Berg roads where a jacket, pink onesie, and black Nike shoes were found that matched what witnesses described Na'Ziyah wearing when she went missing.

Yes! I was looking at all the locations of where he was supposed to be that day, where the items were found etc.
Also, I did some further digging and found that some of his relatives are fairly close to that 8 mile and Berg location.

In addition to announcing charges in the Harris case, Worthy has also charged Butts with sexually abusing two other children who were under 13 at the time. Worthy said one of the victims, who is now 20, was allegedly abused between April 2012 and April 14, while the other victim, who is now 11, was abused from July 2015 until July 2017.

He has been charged with five counts of second-degree criminal sexual conduct and one count of first-degree criminal sexual conduct for those assaults

Authorities believe Butts had been sexually abusing Harris since 2022 before killing her in January. Prosecutors said he had a history of targeting and befriending women to get close to and sexually abuse their daughters.

It’s not the only sexual abuse case Butts is involved with. He also has been charged for reportedly sexually abusing two other young girls, as well as a conviction for sexual assault in 2005. Prosecutors called Butts a “serial child rapist,” who sexually assaulted an 8-year-old family member and a girlfriend’s 4-year-old daughter, who reportedly caught chlamydia from the assault.

Neighbors say investigators remained on the scene into the early morning hours, but they declined to comment further on the investigation on Tuesday (Jan. 7).

“It hurts knowing that it may be a kid,” said Nadia Morris, who lives across the street from where the discovery was made.

“It’s a needle in a haystack when you’re trying to locate or connect and identification with a body; it’s always a tough thing to do, but when you’re starting with potentially an infant or child, it becomes a lot more difficult.”

A resident of the neighborhood told us that police on the scene told her the remains, which were buried in a shallow grave, belonged to a child.

Shannon Jones, the police sergeant that oversaw the investigation into Na'Ziyah Harris's disappearance gave an overarching perspective into how police narrowed down Jarvis Butts as a suspect, including a text message that he would be picking her up from school.

Investigators tracked down Butts' phone after listening to a jail call between him and his coworker CW, who worked at the same auto shop that the defendant was employed at.

[Detective] Johnson testified she spoke with a clerk at a hotel at 20000 Harper in February 2024.

The manager and clerk gave Johnson a sign-in sheet filled in by Butts, where he checked in at 9:30 p.m. on Jan. 9, 2024, and checked out at 12:30 p.m. on Jan. 10.

More than 20 witnesses, including a combination of experts, family members, and law enforcement officials, spoke in court over the past three days. The testimonies were previews of what could presented in court if the case goes before a jury.

A judge is expected to make a decision Thursday on whether the case will go to trial.

I’m struggling a bit with this aunt.

IMO she likely knew prior (as it sounds like everyone did). I’m finding myself struggling to believe she at minimum knew and pushed it to the side but I feel like is likely she knew a lot more. I find myself wondering if she knew about the pregnancy.

She should have been saved and I’m so distraught at how many people could have saved her. In her death she has has saved so many more from this monster
