Two charged in slaying of off-duty Detroit police officer

DETROIT (AP) - Two Detroit men were charged yesterday in the
fatal shooting of an off-duty police officer during a carjacking
attempt.
A week after the shooting, 55-year-old Brion McConnell and
24-year-old Jason Treadwell were both charged with first-degree
murder and felony murder.
Charles Phipps the Third was killed April 28th, just 24 hours
after his wife gave birth to their son.
Services for the nine-year veteran were held on Thursday.
Phipps was slain during a two-hour crime spree in which
McConnell and Treadwell allegedly carjacked and robbed four other
victims on Detroit's west side.
The suspects have also been charged various robbery counts.
First-degree murder carries a mandatory life prison term without
parole.

Also sentenced Wednesday was 29-year-old David Currie of Detroit, who was acquitted of murder but convicted of carjacking and assault with intent to commit murder as an accomplice of Grays. Wayne County Circuit Judge Bruce Morrow sentenced Currie to 35 to 70 years...

Two other men were also charged with Charles Phipps' killing: Detroiters Jason Treadwell, 25, who was convicted earlier this year and Brion McConnell, 56, who pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and testified against Currie and Grays. Treadwell is serving life in prison; McConnell is serving an 18- to 28-year sentence.
