Richard Johnson, 63, has not been seen since about 10:30 p.m. Sunday when he left a residence at Plumtree Apartments off West Michigan Avenue, his son, JJ, said Thursday morning.

Justin and Jessica Johnson, brother and sister, are leading efforts to find their father, Richard, who has been missing since Sunday night.

JJ said his mother, KJ, filed a missing person report Monday, and JJ and his sister JJ2 were told Tuesday by their mother that Richard was missing. Family members went over the area between Plumtree Apartments and Delta Square Apartments, a next-door complex, Tuesday and Wednesday.

JJ said the family was told his father left the Plumtree Apartment residence on foot. Plumtree and Delta Square are adjacent complexes a block south of West Saginaw Highway, and JJ said it's no more than a 12-minute walk.

His father has Huntington's disease, JJ said, which can cause memory issues.

Family members are asking people to gather at 11 a.m. Thursday at at the back of Delta Square Apartments, 5320 W. Michigan Ave., to again search the area. Richard Johnson may have been wearing pajama pants and a military fatigue type sweater, JJ said. A photo posted on Facebook shows Johnson is white, mostly bald with gray hair. His height and weight were not listed.

“I’m super worried,” JJ said. “I don’t know how he could exist that long outside of his own home for eight days.”

JJ said he has checked all of the wooded areas around Delta Square Apartments where Johnson lives with his wife, KJ. JJ said he’s also been checking around Plumtree Apartments, Meijer, and Kroger.

The Eaton County Sheriff’s Office said the investigation is still active. Captain Robert Block said that there are multiple detectives working on Johnson’s disappearance. They have used K-9′s, drones, and pulled video from local stores. Captain Block said they have been to homeless shelters and have posted flyers of Johnson. At this time, the Eaton County Sheriff’s Office is not suspecting any foul play.

“Pretty much everyone’s a wreck. My sister has kids so she’s trying to be strong for them,” JJ said. “I brought my mom in, she’s staying with me now. I don’t know, we’re trying to hold it together but I think we’re all like losing our minds and need some kind of answers.”

Eight days after disappearance, Eaton Sheriff's Office seeks help finding man

DELTA TWP. — The Eaton County Sheriff's Office Monday requested public help in finding Richard Johnson, who went missing more than a week ago in the vicinity of an apartment complex where he lives with his wife.

"We're no closer than we were before," Johnson's son Justin Johnson said Tuesday. "We're just getting dead ends everywhere we go."

Johnson, 63, was last seen about 11 p.m. May 7 in the area of 203 Gatewood Drive at Plumtree Apartments when he left to return to his own residence at Delta Square Apartments, a short distance away.

Johnson’s family has been searching the area since May 9 and organized a public search Thursday to cover more of the area. They’ve also been putting fliers up throughout the area.

Johnson took issue with the length of time between his father's disappearance and the sheriff's release being posted online.

"I don't understand why they drag their feet on releasing a missing persons report to the public," he said. "If they would've just did that in the first day, the community would have had a head start looking for him."

Representatives from the Sheriff's Office didn't immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the Facebook press release.

Monday, the Eaton County Sheriff's Office posted a press release that said Johnson was last seen wearing a long camo jacket, a baseball cap, gray sweatpants and a white or gray T-shirt. Johnson has Huntington’s disease, which may lead to confusion or disorientation. Officials encouraged anyone with information to call the office at 517-543-3512 or 517-323-8480.

A missing person report was filed May 8 by Johnson's wife, Kim, according to Justin Johnson.

Justin Johnson said his father didn't have his wallet or ID with him when he disappeared.

Johnson added that the Sheriff's Office hasn't been actively working with the family and only assigned a detective to the case after media attention.

People viewing the press release on Facebook also expressed outrage at the delay in seeking help.

“I am definitely sad and disappointed that this case of a missing person is just now being communicated to the public,” Nicole Dungey of Lansing said on Facebook. “Not everyone has the same resources and we must rely on our public service professionals for their help when we need it most — someone or several clearly dropped the ball here.”

"Disappointing it took this long for the police to share some details themselves," Tennille Jorgensen-Kenyon said in a post. "Nothing from Eaton County until today. You guys need to do better!"

From the article:

JJ says the last person to see her father was her mother and father’s friend of several years, RM.

“I’m glad I was the last person to see him. But I’m not glad about the circumstances at hand right now,” RM said.

RM says Richard Johnson stopped by to use the bathroom and then left to go to the grocery store. She says everything seemed fine.

“He was spot on. Or I wouldn’t have let him leave my house. I don’t know what the answer’s gonna be because I don’t have much information. I’ve got what you got,” RM said.

Still Missing.

DELTA TWP. — Nearly three months after Richard Johnson’s disappearance, his family has more questions than answers, and they say some of the fault for that lies with how authorities have handled the case.

"It kills me because that was my dad. And I still have a lot to do in life and I need my dad to be there too," his daughter Jessica Johnson said.

She says they feel like the Eaton County Sheriff's Office has been no help.

"He's a missing person, why haven't you called us once a week, once a month? Let us know what you've done and what you're doing," Jessica said.

Jessie Johnson says a body was identified in Detroit that matches the description of Richard Johnson. She says she has given DNA in hopes that there’s a match. But it’s been roughly three weeks, and she still awaits results.
