I came across this one a while back while researching a different case.
William Mayer was shot dead while he was sitting at his kitchen table playing cards with his wife and son.
He had been arrested for something related to organized crime and had apparently turned state's evidence. Somebody didn't like that.
So far as I can tell, the case was never solved.

Maybe someone with a Newspapers.com subscription can share more information.

That isn't the same article that I originally found at the library, but I'm sure it has the same basic information.

they're from a subscription only access point. Seems like sharing the whole thing would be unethical.

It's Newspapers.com if you'd like to subscribe.

"Mayer found his family dog dead of poisoning outside the house just before Christmas."

If someone kills your dog, I guess it might mean that person intends to come back to the property at a later date in order to commit another crime. Mayer likely thought that the killing of his dog was meant to intimidate him, but the real purpose was probably to make sure that the dog wouldn't be there to warn the family by barking at the hitman.

I came across some information regarding a police report and then a court report. The police report spoke about a drug deal that happened in Lathrup Village at William Mayers insurance office. However it was sketchy about whether or not he was an actual informant. It spoke about a woman they called in for questioning. While william sat in handcuffs she came in saying something along the lines of" now you've done it. He going to kill us both" There is a strong incinuation that William Mayer was an informant. However the report did not conclusively confirm. It is in my mind suspicious . The details of where exactly the shooter stood also has me wondering. If he was just outside the window, that would mean hed gave to calculate the window breakage as well as not be confident of ricochet. Likelihood, if it were a hitmen, the hitman was a bit off his game. The hitman must have needed to e a good shottbid puts TBD shooter location attbe back fence. Whi h leads to a court. So it makes more sense for a hit.an to shoot from there. Ots farther away, but if theres he with his wife an oldest som that's not very predictable s maybe they possibly put William Mayer out as an informant. The court record was of a man and woman who's charges were dropped sue to William Mayer unable to appear. Probably because he was deceased.i of course cannot find those records again. But it seems t hes going to kill us" me William Mayer could possibly be a result of the lack of protection that should have been provided..I also suspect that tje law enforcement may have enabled the idea of William Mayer being an informant..I'm suspicious of the lack of information. It was a pretty big deal back in those daysfir someone to be murdered like that in Madison Heights.aaaaaaaa
Thanks for sharing the articles! I don't have high hopes that anyone will be brought to justice in this case.
I was close to family. It was devastating for me at the time. Wish I could find mire information.
