I came across this one a while back while researching a different case.
William Mayer was shot dead while he was sitting at his kitchen table playing cards with his wife and son.
He had been arrested for something related to organized crime and had apparently turned state's evidence. Somebody didn't like that.
So far as I can tell, the case was never solved.
Maybe someone with a Newspapers.com subscription can share more information.

That isn't the same article that I originally found at the library, but I'm sure it has the same basic information.
